CoolPaintr VR – The Review

October 2, 2019 ·

I want everyone to close their eyes and just breathe for a moment. Now while your eyes are closed I want you to open your door to your imagination. What do you find? Something creative? Something artistic? Something from your childhood waiting to get out and explore? Do you see the colors of the art you are trying to create?

Do you wish that you had something that would allow you to bring your creative imagination to life? Then look no further as something so special has been created from Developer Wildbit Studios and Publisher Sngular Entertainment with CoolPaintr VR for PlayStation VR.

For the longest time, there has been a need and a want to be able to draw and create our own Virtual Reality space with many different options from different brushes to special effects. Finally, we no longer have to keep wishing for our very own 3D paint brushing experience to make its marks on PlayStation VR. When I first heard about CoolPaintr VR, my imagination started to run wild. What would I create? What could I draw? Would I be able to incorporate music while creating and painting? The answer is yes to all of these questions and more.

When I finally got to create with CoolPaintr VR, I was entered into this grid-like space. Remember at the beginning I said to close your eyes and let your imagination come to life? Just think of this space as your mind and looking around there is nothing much, just the empty space. Now you could just let it be and think or you can grab the one Move controller and begin to unleash your imagination. This is your playground and you make it how you want and what you want and as colorful as you want.

Cool Paintr VR move controller

Wildbit Studios have done a fantastic job of giving you all the tools you need to let your creative juices flow. You will notice on the normal Move controller you have the Square, Triangle, X and Circle buttons as well as the Move button. Let’s go over the buttons to help you get used to where everything is and what it can do.

The top left (Square) button is what you will use to select your mode. You are able to select from drawing, erase, move, delete, undo, redo, save, load, export, and options. Selecting save or load will give the option of saving to the PS4 or a USB drive.

On the bottom left (X) button is where you will be able to gain another tool that looks like a magnifying glass. This will allow you to increase or decrease the size of your drawing to give you more space or help add to those beaches and having Jaws come out of the water only to then have a UFO come down and attack (see what happens when you let your imagination flow).

On the top right (triangle) button is where you will have options for things such as your brushes, dropper, solids, tubes, multiple, particles, you can even do symmetry, load images as well as have diffuse, specular and self-illuminated.

On the bottom right (circle) button is your palette. There are some standard colors to select from or you may move the circle on the square to get more options for colors. Want even more choices, move the sliders on the right and really you have the unlimited freedom to be as colorful as you want to be.

By hitting the Move button, you will then be able to move your drawings out of your way if you see fit. This comes in handy if you are just needing that fresh space. But keep in mind you have a full 360 degrees to play around in. So feel free to walk around your drawings or have your drawings surround you.

If you notice I mentioned a couple of things. A USB drive, image, and options. If you have space on your PS4 either by the internal hard drive or an external hard drive then you have that option or if you have a USB thumb drive, feel free to use that as well. You are able to load images and use that within CoolPaintr Vr. So if you are one that needs to look at a picture in order to draw, you have the option to do so. If you want to play music while creating, just head over to the options and load your music and just get into your creative state of mind.

There are a few things I would love to see. I would love to see even more brushes of different shapes, sizes, and textures. As many times as I was creating and drawing, at times I thought if I just had a can of paint that I could splash around or a sponge to just add that special touch and have my mind be even more creative. I would also love the ability to use a second Move controller. I can see it now, say if you wanted to do oil paintings and you could look at the second Move controller and have a palette of colors right there. I am sure all this could be added in the future as DLC and this just gives the excitement about what could possibly come to CoolPaintr VR.

CoolPaintr VR really is the ultimate package when it comes to being creative. The way you are able to move the lines to bend, mold, and create objects in our own 3D canvas. The way you are able to walk around your creations and make them bigger or smaller is simply everything I have wanted.  CoolPaintr VR is something PlayStation VR gamers and fans have been asking for. Being able to get lost for hours in your own space, listening to your own music, and just being able to be as creative and as artistic as you want to be is just as refreshing and relaxing as I hoped it would be. The only real limitation is you and what your mind will allow.

CoolPaintr VR3

If we enter the world of Virtual Reality in order to escape to a different world, then CoolPaintr VR is the door to the gateway that allows us to colorize the escape. We all want our own place to allow us to let our inner Rembrandt, Monet, and Bob Ross come out and shine. And isn’t that what we really want, a way to create our own world the way we see it, the way we wish it could be, and just make it our own?

CoolPaintr VR is out now. A review copy was provided.
