Richie’s Plank Experience – The Review

October 4, 2019 ·

Virtual Reality can do amazing things as I am sure you are aware. It can allow you to escape from your reality to another reality. You can become a hero or decide to play the villain. But did you know that Virtual Reality can also help with fears? From public speaking to Acrophobia, Virtual Reality can help overcome the fears that we know to hopefully something that we only used to think about. So does Developer Toast VR, help to try to overcome your fear and introduce you to new heights? Let’s find out with Richie’s Plank Experience for PlayStation VR.

Before anything, please make sure you read and abide by the warning above. So what is Richie’s Plank Experience really about and what all can you do. First and foremost, Richie’s Plank Experience exists for a few different reasons. Number one would be when you have people over or going to parties and you are introducing people to Virtual Reality for the first time and you want to entertain them and yourself. The second reason would be to help. I will talk more about this in a minute.

My first experience had me on the street and with the DualShock 4 controller in my hand (you can use the Move controllers), I started to look around. It was such a nice day with vehicles getting to their destinations. As I was looking, I was notified that I needed to head to the elevator and as I went in and I pushed button, I could hear the birds chirping away as almost letting me know that soon I would be playing Battleship with the Grim Reaper…sink his Battleship and make my return…Excellent!

So as the elevator doors closed and finally opened up, the plank was in front of me and having a flashback like I needed to walk the plank as I wanted to get enough treasure to save my home, I walked. I was amazed by the height at which I was and I started to have a second thought and I could hear the traffic below. That’s when the plank I was standing on started to creak and that’s when I was falling and soon saw the bright light.

When I awoke, I was back on the city street which upon I begin and I decided to see if this was Groundhog Day and go back into the elevator. Then I decided to press the button for the Fire Deck because the city needs me…needs me I say. And in my hands appeared the most glorious of fire extinguishers that I have ever virtually seen. To the normal eye, it may look normal, but have you ever pressed a button that says the city needs you while holding a fire extinguisher? I think not.

The door opened and my first fire was in front of me and you know what? That fire didn’t even have a chance and you know why? Because of the glorious fire extinguisher that I used because the city needed me. But then something magical happened, my glorious fire extinguisher became the most glorious of rockets. I was able to fly around and become a hero putting out fires wherever I could and no matter how high the building was and you know why? Because the city needed me.

What you may find very interesting and something that may be a little surprising is that you can bring your own plank. Yes, it’s true and in fact, it is actually encouraged. You can actually set up the measurements of your and then walk on your own plank. This is good as if this is someone’s first experience with Virtual Reality, being able to feel with their feet where they enhance the experience.

Earlier, I mentioned help. Virtual Reality can actually help with your fears and if you or someone such as a family member have Acrophobia, the fear of heights, then this might be the step in the right direction to help them get over their fear. If nothing else, the family member that has Acrophobia and was mean to you at an earlier age, have them try this and just record them. If nothing else it will be therapeutic for you as you enjoy, laugh, and be entertained for all the times they messed with you.

Sound wise nothing here is too overproduced. Vehicles sound like vehicles and hearing the birds chip gives presents this calmness of what a typical city day might be like. Visually looking at Richie’s Plank Experience does have some nice detail to it. The buildings from the street view and looking up to even high above and looking down before you free fall and meet the ground has some pretty good detail. But sound and visuals are not the focus here as it is truly the experience.

If anything I would love some different scenes such as maybe the cliffs from Hawaii or Big Ben from the UK or even fall into different elements such as water or even a volcano. Also, I would love to different items being used such as an umbrella or maybe ride with Santa on his sleigh on the PlayStation VR. But the good news is the Developer Toast VR is working on some updates, so who knows what may appear next.

Richie’s Plank Experience may not be for everyone and that is something that you need to consider if it is right for you. Do you have friends or associates who have never tried PlayStation VR or maybe need some help getting over a fear? Then this may be the experience you show them.

Richie’s Plank Experience is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift/S on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
