VERTI-GO HOME! – The Review

October 5, 2019 ·

I want you for a moment to sit, relax, and open your mind. Don’t think about any troubles that you may have, don’t think about the frustrations that you have faced. In fact, just think of your mind as a place that can open the door of the journey to the destination. Do you think you could get there without any bumps along the way? It really is interesting how the mind works and what it can really do. But does Developer Trucker VR show us how to embark on the journey while avoiding the obstacles that represent what may be encountered every day? Let’s find out with VERTI-GO HOME! for the PlayStation VR.

So what is VERTI-GO HOME! really about and what do you do? Verti-Go Home! is an endless runner, but it’s an endless runner that allows you to travel through your mind as you try to avoid the ancient day of the dead spirits as they haunt you as you go through and around while also avoiding the different obstacles that are in your way. But your goal is really simple, get as far as you can without crashing and see if you can be the best in the world on the leaderboards. So either enjoy the ride or VERTI-GO HOME!

These obstacles can be anything from dancing skeletons to skeleton heads that move around (or may just be still) to rotating knives to cigars. There really are too many to name here. But how would you move around through your mind? It surely would not be with the DualShock 4 controller (I am sure many will argue that point), that would be too simple. Here just as you are traveling through your mind, you must use your head to tilt left and right and steer your way as you try to make it level after level while avoiding so said obstacles.

I will say that the faster you tilt, the faster you will turn. However, you can either look at as a way to move past the obstacles as fast as possible, but since you don’t know what may pop up, you may at times want to take the safe approach. But again if you have some rotating obstacles that can totally throw off your game either way as you will crash after crash.

One thing I like is how after every 3 levels, you get a checkpoint. So as long as you at least make it to a checkpoint, you will not have to start back at the beginning. That is unless you get out of the game completely. But I think that is what kept me going. I knew when I crashed on the even levels, if I just kept at it, I would succeed and so many times I got to close to where it would allow me to have a new checkpoint that I could taste it and I did want to give up. But I just kept going and going until I made it and there was this satisfaction after each checkpoint I reached and I just wanted to keep on playing.

But even when I crashed over and over, I had to look and see where I was on the global aspect of the leaderboards as far as crash-free and distance. It’s this small, but yet an effective piece that works here and that makes you want to challenge yourself and keep trying to be the best that you can.

Let’s talk about graphics for a moment. The graphics here are sharp and very appealing. Seeing the dancing skeletons along with statues, mushrooms, cigars and so many other random obstacles as you are able to move around and through the tunnels is a pleasure to look at. Do some of the obstacles and levels start to repeat? Yes, but because those obstacles are randomized, it does add to the challenge as you do not know what might be coming up next.

When it comes to sound, there really isn’t too much from the soundtrack other than when you may hit obstacles, hearing that you have a new time, and checkpoint. But the soundtrack I did really enjoy and like the obstacles, are random which is something I liked. Going in each time, you not only are not sure what might be coming your way but mixing that with the soundtrack is a nice touch.

There are a few things that I would like to see added. The only way to move is by tilting your head left and right. There might be some players that may not like that aspect as much as others. I think by adding the DualShock 4 controller to be able to move might be a good option for some. The other thing that would be great here is the ability to use your own music. Being able to incorporate your music library via a USB thumb drive would allow so many people to get their own mindset and groove. But then I just now thought about it, if adding your own music could be incorporated, then that would be a different mode with its own set of leaderboards that could be added. Think about it, the top global leaders of your favorite band and trying to aim even higher on those leaderboards. It might not happen, but it still would be awesome to have.

Clearing our minds can be easier for some than for others. Sometimes the obstacles that we encounter can have a deeper meaning and reflection based on our own lives. No matter how hard one may try, sometimes you just have to keep trying, but if you find yourself hitting the same obstacle, maybe it’s time to try a different direction to see what path life may lead you to.

VERTI-GO HOME! is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Rift/S, Oculus Go, and Gear VR on the Oculus Store. A review code was provided.
