What would happen if one day all that you knew or thought you knew was not how it was supposed to be? And what if on that day, you were in a place that you did not know? The questions you would need to ask yourself is if this were to happen to you in a place that you did not recognize, would you do what was told for your own safety and out of your own fears and how far would you be willing to go to get the answers of the questions? For you and me, everything is as normal as we think it should be. But what does Developer Wolf & Wood Interactive allow us to enter the mind of what would be out of the norm for some and that might actually be a reality for others? Let’s find out with A Chair in a Room: Greenwater for the PlayStation VR.
Before we really get into the review, I do want to point out that A Chair in a Room: Greenwater does deal with what can be some may consider the disturbing subject matter. With that said, let’s continue.
A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a horror escape room type experience, but don’t let the escape room idea set the tone for the entire game here as it branches out more than you would think. Based in the south, you play as the patient no. 6079, John Doe does not have any idea what is going on as you have no memories of why you are here at the Greenwater Institute. So it will be up to you to try and help piece everything together as you investigate institutional corruption, religious immorality, and murder, which will need to be unlocked by searching deep within your own mind, soul, and spirit in hopes of getting the answers that you are looking for.
So before trying to put this puzzle of your life together, you will need to decide if you want to use the DualShock 4 or both Move controllers. I, of course, went with the Move controllers as I do enjoy having that freedom of being in the immersion and being able to move my hands separately and plus I really like the different options for movement such as free move and teleportation
I did mention the words escape room and you really cannot have an escape room without puzzles. But one thing that A Chair in a Room: Greenwater does very well is to help give you some clues by having them appear on your hand. The thing you have to try and not to forget is that this option is there for you. There were times that I forgot about it and it could have saved me some time.
Within each location, you will start to gather clues as places you may have visited before and hopefully you can have some type of recollection about. But just as something may seem to become what you think might be normal changes into something more strange and with each new dose of something strange the more I could not stop playing to find out what was going on.
What you will notice is how many things you are able to pick up and interact with, but keep in mind, not everything you can pick up will you be able to use to help solve the puzzles. This is when it becomes important to check your hand for that important clue if you get a little stuck. I did find it somewhat satisfying to be able to move on to the next location after solving the puzzles, but it’s when no matter what you try doesn’t work only to then find the answer you may be looking for is right in front you.
But it’s when you start moving out of the norm and expecting to find another escape type room only to have the unexpected start to take you for a ride that things really start to become more interesting and then adds to your list of even more questions on top of the questions you already had that you thought maybe you had the answers for.
Now I also mentioned horror and when you have a horror element to the mix, there is something that you should probably expect and that is the jump scares. And just when you think you may know exactly when so said jump scares will happen and by what, the developers have decided that they will not go easy on you and they will not listen to your pleads of happiness. Instead, the jump scares do exactly that in they are unexpected and they will make you jump.
I for one will not save you on what to expect or even talk about nor show any jump scares nor will I reveal any surprises as you will want to experience them on your own (if you can handle it) as I would not want to ruin any of it for you. So expect the unexpected and there is no shame in yelling in fear. In fact, it’s good for the soul. So with that being said, scream..just embrace your screams and enjoy the whatever twists that may come your way.
Let’s talk about the graphics. A Chair in a Room: Greenwater has some very sharp details when it comes to graphics giving that pure feel to the environments around you. One part had you in a cabin in the swamps and I was pretty impressed with the immersion that I was given and seeing the crocodile just out in the murky water added to it. I really loved it when riding on the water and how gloomy everything looked and the developers did a wonderful job of bringing this to life.
One of the things you will want to pay attention to is the sounds as they make excellent use of the 3D audio. When you pick up a glass bottle and break it, it sounds like a glass bottle breaking or even when you close a dresser drawer, it sounds like it should. There will be times where just by picking up an object a certain sound or the mood of the music may change and having the audio play as it does serves as important as the elements and clues around you that really becomes the well-rounded package you would hope for.
What I was surprised about was how A Chair in a Room: Greenwater started out with a room and each location became a bigger escape to almost a way to escape the mind of what it was being held against. And at times when the escape is our desire, sometimes that desire becomes the escape that will hold us from reality.
