Five Nights At Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted – The Review

October 6, 2019 ·

Jump scares can be a brilliant thing. They keep you on edge as you expect them to happen, but not sure when and where they may occur. When you bring this element into Virtual Reality, you are no longer have that safety net per se, but instead, are brought into a world where you must play by its rules. So do Developer Steel Wool Studios and Publisher Scottgames and Lionsgate take you out of your element and welcome you into its world of jump scares? Let’s find out with Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted for the PlayStation VR.

Before we begin, I want to have it notated that if you have any heart conditions, easily prone to having nightmares or if jumpscares cause you to have any emotional outbursts, just let it be known, that myself and The PlayStation Brahs feel for your pain and suffering and or laughter that others may have based on your reactions. I also, will not spoil every moment of this experience as I do not want to deprive anyone of their own heartwarming moments and memories. With that said and as long as you know what you are getting into or what you may think you are getting yourself into, let’s continue.

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is set in the universe of Five Nights at Freddy’s with the collection of classic and original mini-games. Your job is simple, survive your encounters with your favorite animatronics as they come to live and have some fun at your expense. But before you begin and see if your blood is still pumping and your heart is working, you need to decide if you will be going full out DualShock 4 or be using both Move controllers. I will say that using the DualShock 4 (which I did try when I first played), while it does work, just doesn’t work as well for me as using both Move controllers. With both Move controllers which are represented by hands, you have more of an easy way to click buttons that are needed compared to trying to control a single DualShock 4 controller where it is kind of limiting with your movement. So again, what works best for me, may work best for you or you may find using a different control method works better for you.

I just love the way that before I was even given the OK with the consent to be part of this experience, I got to read over the digital waiver (well, in all honesty, it was read to me) and once the 10 seconds have passed, it means I acknowledge and agree to whatever subjective e. Thumbs up on this humor Steel Wool Studios…thumbs up.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted has you playing as a night watchman at the wonderful and delightful Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Thing is you are pretty much all alone and nothing says welcome like animatronics that can come to life in the middle of the night looking for you. So it is going to be your job to survive (for the most part until 6:00 A.M. in hopes that Freddy and his friends do not in some way find you, because if they do, heave the warning at the beginning, you will be jumping. Oh, and it’s not some simple boo and ahhh, no that would be too kind. This is you know they are coming for you and when you least expect it regardless of how much you think you are expecting it, the animatronics, the ones that you have been warned about, will get in your face and make you jump.

So how do you survive? Well, depending on the mini-game of sorts that you choose, some may have you monitoring the cameras while you try to save on the energy for the doors and lights while some may have you trying to stop one of Freddy’s friends right on an X or maybe you will need to put on the head to help maintain your sanity. As I mentioned earlier, I will not and cannot tell you everything, if you love jump scares, you will want to experience this one for yourself.

Each level of the Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, 2, 3, Dark Rooms, Parts and Service, and Vent Repair has a certain amount of mini-game chapters within it to survive or complete the task that is needed and you unlock the next experience. But what I like is how you are not forced to go in any order of the levels as you can select what level you would like to start at, but you do have start at the first chapter of that level. But luckily it’s not all going in blind as you so get some assistance that could be through a voice over the phone or a voice just letting you know what needs to happen. I will suggest that you listen to what is being told as you are not going to get your handheld here, but it may help you just enough to survive the night or the task at hand. If you are the type of person that doesn’t want to listen, then may your heart be a strong one.

I want to talk about the sound and graphics for a moment. I have said this before and I will say it again here, sound plays an important part in the VR experience. Hearing what is being told and trying to figure out what needs to be done, is part of the fun. But it’s when you can start to hear those small sounds that are placed just right that you start to feel the urgency of the situation, that if you are not careful, it will become too late. Small things like flipping the switches to see the different security cameras or even when it comes to complete silence and your mind starts to factor into things show something that regardless of you being the one to experience or watching the experience can all have some type of smile on your face in the end.

When you think about graphics, you want to be able to escape your own reality and to have that feeling that you are there and Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted opens its doors and welcomes you to the visual enclosure of this universe. When I was in the booth, for example, everything seemed really clear and detailed, but also gave me a sense from the lighting and what I could see to almost feel like I was all alone and something was about to get me. Light, as well as the sound, plays an important role either to being just enough light so you can see or even just having a flashlight in hopes that it will last just enough so that you may accomplish what is needed without the possible results that you know will be coming. But I loved the detail that has been put in from the smallest of things like buttons to being up close and personal with the animatronics.

Oh, I did forget to mention one thing. When you have enough coins, make sure you visit the Prize Counter as you never know what type of prize you may receive. This was one of the prizes I earned and let me tell you, that seeing it here, does not even do it justice in VR.

In life, it is a good thing when we can test ourselves either through goals that we have made either as an individual or as a team and sometimes we just need something to make us feel alive. Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted does just that. Now remember if we are the ones that are experiencing the scares or we know someone that we will get the joy out of watching getting scared, just remember who you unleash Freddy on as that can easily come back to haunt you. Regardless of when you may experience this, just know that Halloween will be coming and you will want something to be in your arsenal of tricks and Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted just maybe what the scare doctor ordered.

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
