Ski Jumping Pro VR – The Review

December 14, 2019 ·

Winter has a few meanings to different people. For some, it would be Christmas, a Winter break from school, even snowball fights. But for some, the sport of skiing down the slopes or even ski jumping to maybe one day have the hopes of becoming good enough to make the Olympic team for their country. I for one would like to ski down the slopes throwing snowballs at the other skiers in a big snowball fight and if you fall before the jump you are out. It’s one of those thoughts that will never make it, but one can dream, right? But has Developer Yippee Entertainment and Publisher Kalypso Media show us if we should make the jump? Let’s find out with Ski Jumping Pro VR for the PlayStation VR.

The goal you are trying to reach with Ski Jumping Pro VR is to get the furthest jump possible without crashing and burning as you hit the snow and hope that you don’t break your neck. So it is not as simple as just launching, jumping, and landing, there are some techniques that you will need to master before trying to win the circuit and hopefully get that trophy. So make sure your Dualshock 4 controller or both of your Move controls are charged and get ready to make that jump. Since I was going for the more traditional experience, I went with the Move controller option.

When you first start Ski Jumping Pro VR, you will be welcomed with a few options: Quick Jump which allows you to jump freely, Career where you will compete around the world in the Continental, World, and Sky Flying World Cup, the 4 Hills Tournament, and Team Tour and Profile. The profile is where you can set your country as well as shop for different items that can be purchased as you compete. These range from skis, boots, helmets, gloves, and clothes. Each of the items that can be purchased is better for different things. Better clothes might give you a better advantage for flight, while certain helmet might give you better focus and inrun. Some time might need to be spent here to figure out which is the best combo for you. But I will say some of the prices for these items are up there, so you may have to make many jumps in order to afford them.

So once you have the country you are representing and the standard equipment on you unless you jumped right in and earned some money, it’s time to make those jumps. I would suggest starting with Quick Jump so you can get used to how everything will go from the launch to the landing of your jump, but be warned that the tutorial is not that all in-depth. With both Move controllers you in hand, you will need to move them down when the timer is in the green and on the way down you will want to make sure you are balanced otherwise that can and will affect your score. You also have to jump at the right moment and be able to land without crashing. So all of this goes into your final score where you are judged.

So what you have to think about is the different sections of the jump. The launch, the track itself, the jump, and the landing. All will require timing and balance in order to keep your rank up on the leaderboards. One thing I was hoping for to be included was actual leaderboards with players. But unfortunately, this is an AI leaderboard with only you being the real player.

But one of the things I liked about Ski Jumping Pro VR, is that the different areas from around the world that are shown and how it is presented by being different even though you are doing the same thing over again. If you want a view of Innsbruck Austria or Oberstdorf Germany, it’s here. So it’s just kind of cool seeing the different settings at different times of the day and night. Another thing is after your jump, you get to see the replay view that will show your jump and landing. It’s a nice touch that shows a different perspective.

Looking at the graphics, the different parts of the world with different times of the day are a nice touch such as when the sun is setting and at night time which might be my favorite. I do like it when it is windy and seeing the trees move in the snow as well as seeing the crowd below cheering me on as I looked around from high above did make me feel good on my jumps. The sound was pretty good as when you go down the jumping ramp sounds like I think it would sound if I was actually doing this sport. But maybe my favorite sound is when you make that jump and the sound almost cuts out so you can almost hear what would be your heartbeat if you were in that moment and looking down hoping you do not become a relative to Frosty the Snowman when you land.

There are some things that I wish were present. For one, actual leaderboards. I appreciate that they are present, but would love to have leaderboards with real players. It would be also fun to have an online multiplayer so everyone can compete in real-time. Also, I would love to see some added elements added such as landing on a specific target or even land on like a Tic-Tac-Toe board to add more fun to the experience.

Ski Jumping Pro VR adds something new to the PlayStation VR library all while showcasing the trials of what a potential bigger picture of what a Virtual Reality multiplayer Olympic experience could be like.

Ski Jumping Pro VR is out now for PlayStation VR and is also available on Steam. A review code was provided.
