Marvel: Powers United VR – The Review

June 29, 2021 ·

Imagine being part of the Marvel universe and fighting on the side of good vs that what is evil. Think about your favorite Marvel hero and becoming them with their powers. Who would you be? Wolverine, Deadpool, Blackbolt, or maybe even the Incredible Hulk. All have their strengths and weaknesses, but all bring out that inner superhero we all thought about becoming at some point either growing up and using our imaginations, reading comic books, or even watching the movies. But does developer Sanzaru Games bring the ability to feel like a superhero? Let’s find out with Marvel: Powers United VR for PCVR.

Before we get into the review, yes, this game came out in 2018. I actually got Marvel: Powers United VR Oculus Rift bundle shortly after it was released and I should have had this out sooner. But there is no time like the present and plus I was in a Marvel type of mood and thought this would be a good time to make the review. So with that said, let’s continue.

Marvel: Powers United VR allows you to unleash your rage and smash foes in VR as you lock ‘n load with your favorite superheroes as you take out waves of enemies as you stand united with other players in different worlds in glorious Virtual Reality. The first thing when starting the game is the music like you are getting ready to assemble a team where you can play with four other players. The main menu gives us the Prologue, Powers, Hero Select, Match Status, Goals, Settings, and Exit. Going into settings first, the selection of dominant hand, volumes, camera shake, and even comfort shake to name a few are all present. Goals will show the different goals of the game that you are trying to meet such as stun 10 foes with Charged Widow’s Bite, KO enemies with weapons, and things like KO enemies while cloaked. So really fun goals to keep in mind while you are in the middle of the action. Match Status is where you can invite other players or try to find a match. Hero is where you can see all the different heroes within the game and the powers that they have. So even if you may not be too familiar with that particular hero, you do get to see what their skills are and what they look like. And powers shows your favorite heroes performing those powers for a short time.

But speaking of heroes, there is a lot here from Rocket to Storm to Black Panther to Spider-Man and you can play as any of them which playing as Incredible Hulk is as incredible as you would think, and when you add the size of the Hulk in comparison to the rest of the heroes, you can tell a lot of work went into the details of the characters.

But before getting into the waves of action, it’s time to enter the prologue where you will need to select from Captain America and Black Widow. I went with Captain America and I will say the first time you actually see your arms as Captain America and throw the shield to have it come back in the city as you are seeing other heroes help in the fight all in VR, is done very well. Being able to see and hear Wolverine and Deadpool throw in insults back at each other is just something that will put a smile on your face.

After the prologue is when you are able to get into the wave-based missions which are really just two different parts. One you will need to defend the node and then you have to try and find the eight different power cells that are scattered and bring them back to the node all while you and three other players or AI superheroes try to help defend and attack the enemies which are there just to attack and will keep reappearing until you have become successful which is not too tough, but there is no need to concentrate on your abilities as it seems our superheroes don’t get tired, no need to reload any heroes weapons that require ammo, and no need to worry about friendly fire.

After each round of waves, your score is added up along with any goals and mini objectives you completed while will give you some loot which you can then use at the game’s lobby, go to the award room, open up your loot boxes, artifacts, hopefully new costumes and wait for it…superhero poses to unlock. Along with these unlockables, you are also trying to collect the 25 pieces of the Cosmic Cube which you get for each villain you defeat during the wave modes.

Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. You can tell just by looking around from the moment that you enter the prologue to being in battle, that the developer took a lot of time to make sure the graphics and detail were top notch. Each of the different costumes to the weapons that were used to the different stages such as the Dark Dimension, Downtown New York, and even Jotunhelm all looked really good in VR. When the action was going on and seeing the enemy soldiers, you could easily make them out, but they were just generic and not nearly as detailed as the Spider-Man or Dr. Strange. The sound from the beginning sounded good but is mixed in a little too much with the other sounds, the firing of the weapons, and a couple of times I missed what some of the heroes were saying because the sound wasn’t as balanced as it could have been. Not saying this is a bad thing, but when there is a lot of action and trying to make out everything was more challenging at times than others.

There are some things that I wish could have been added or addressed. For one, multiplayer. I tried on many occasions and just could never get in a match with anyone. There was one game where it looked like someone was about to join, but they never connected fully. Second, there is a lot of superheroes here and it would have been fun to see additional heroes added down the line. And third, the server. As of March 1, 2021, the game was taken down never to be played again in what I truly fear has happened…
