A Fisherman’s Tale – The Review

October 5, 2019 ·

One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes is the one about five different characters inside a box just wondering what else could there be out there and do whatever they can to find an exit. The characters show hope, determination, doubt, and even acceptance. All the possibilities of their mind. But in order to break on through to the other side, everything they thought they might know, would be sort of flipped. Their realization now would have a different outlook and meaning. But if every day you were to try to find that door…that exit, only to try to open it to find out that your day was to start over again and you started to do what you did the day before and the day before that? What if the real reason why things repeated was that right when you get to the point where your life was to continue, you stop? And maybe the reason you stop is that the person writing your story picked up the pen. But does Developer Innerspace VR and Publisher Virtego Games allow for a tale worth being told? Let’s find out with A Fisherman’s Tale for the PlayStation VR.

Before I continue, I want to say this, I am not going to share too much as you need to experience this tale that is being told. With that said, let’s continue.

So what is A Fisherman’s Tale about and what do you do? Imagine everything you do in life as you know it and every day you wake up, go to work, come home, become that family person, eat, game, and go to sleep. Every day you are on repeat and going about things and not really thinking about it. But then there is that one day where you stop and question the meaning of life. Think of that as A Fisherman’s Tale. Every day you have been living the life in your lighthouse. But the lighthouse life can get a little lonely, so to help pass the time, you start making a model of the lighthouse that you are in. Everything the replica that you see it now, only in a smaller version of what you know. Then one day, you realize you are the puppet inside the lighthouse of the Fisherman who created the model to then realize that a Fisherman created that model and puppet which created the model you live in now and created you, a puppet, and so on and told through Narration. Think about that for a minute.

But the trippy thing is that you realize the smaller version of you and the smaller version of that puppet as well as the bigger version of you and so on, can work together. The story is that you need to get to the top of the lighthouse as there is a boat out there that needs light from the lighthouse so it can be rescued. So make sure your Move controllers are charged as you will be needing them. I do want to point this out and that simply thank you to Innerspace VR by allowing your hands within the game to extend out. What this means is there is no need to worry about any tracking issues and you do not have to worry about space. It just works.

But how does one really going to get to the top of this huge lighthouse? I mean looking down, things are smaller, but when you look up, it adds this whole new perspective. So anything you pick up around you, the smaller puppet you in the smaller model of the lighthouse that you are currently in, will be picked up. This is where you have to at certain times to start thinking outside the box or model if you will and work together with both the puppet above as well as below you to help solve the puzzles to help continue to tell the tale and hopefully rescue that troubled sailer by lighting the lights of the lighthouse.

And I have to say, I love the way the puzzles are used here. They are really well done the perspective you have to start looking really brings out the magic in A Fisherman’s Tale. In one part, you have a big anchor that is blocking a door. Well, you can lift it, and it’s when you start thinking of how to move it since the view as you see it would be too heave to lift for a puppet and then it clicks. It is something that works extremely well in Virtual Reality.

Let’s talk about the sound here. The sound is so well balanced that the sound along with the visuals, puzzles, and narration all have this harmony that equals out the immersion. The calming music as you just admire this world that welcomes you with open arms is very soothing to the ears and hearing the water around you is just really well done. Oh, and the narration is done by none other than comedian Augustine Jacob. Well done Augustine Jacob…well done.

Visually this is why we love Virtual Reality. When you can incorporate your surroundings the way A Fisherman’s Tale does, it says something. There is this part where you are on a boat and the way you feel immersed is like you are driving a boat and you feel like you would in that size of a boat. Seeing water splash against the windows just adds to it. Supporting characters like they could be animatronics and have them come to life the way that they do, I replayed certain parts just because of how well presented it was.

I really want to say more and share more, but I can’t and I won’t. I said I wasn’t going to spoil too much and I lived up to that promise, but sometimes there comes along something very special and that for a moment when you first look at it you may not be too sure, but it’s when you take the time to take a deeper look inside that you find that real joy.

A Fisherman’s Tale is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Rift/S and Oculus Quest on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
