Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs – The Review

October 5, 2019 ·

I am sure at some point in your life you have played Angry Birds on some type of device from mobile to console. There has been everything from toys to movies and really doesn’t seem to be any stopping the craze. So does Developer Resolution Games bring a new perspective angle to the mix? Let’s found out with Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs for the PlayStation VR.

Yes, Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs the familiar charm that you know and love, but this time in Virtual Reality. So before you get all eager and trying to slingshot birds at pigs resulting in some violence that you probably will not regret, please make sure that both of your Move controllers are fully charged as you don’t want to be that one person who’s slingshot will not shoot because you decided to not be responsible enough to charge them. Now, that you charged Move controllers in your hands, let’s continue.

In Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs it is your job to take out those pigs who seem pretty innocent and just want a chance to live in a society in the housing structures that they built on their own. Using the Move controllers you will pull back the slingshot that I will say, works very well, (and that I had no problem with the PlayStation camera detecting where the Move controllers were at any time) and try to aim the Angry Bird at either the pigs, structures or sometimes TNT boxes to fall down on the pigs or structures to try and take out the pigs of each level. Each level has you starting with three birds that, unfortunately, you cannot select the order in which they are used. So it will be up to you to use them in the best way possible. But out of all the Angry Birds, Red, Chuck, Bomb, and the Blues are able to be used. Red, of course, is the more direct bird. Chuck has the speed, Bomb will make things go boom, and the blues can become three different birds.

There will be a time that no matter how many times you try, you may not be able to knock down the structures and take out all the pigs that are needed to move to the next level. Normally in the flat mobile/console version, you just have that, a flat view, but here in Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, you have the ability to move to different points of view in order to hit the sweet spot and watch all the hopes and dreams of any type of survival that the pigs may have had gone away due to your amazing aim and skill.

Let’s talk about the graphics. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is beautifully presented. From the colors of each of the worlds to seeing Bomb make things explode to even seeing the small detail of the pigs getting wounded is a very nice touch and I do like how each level has that special Angry Bird humor with the title and description. The way your perspective is shown does make this the best way to play Angry Birds. Sound-wise from the simple soundtrack that has this relaxing tone to it that seems to match each level to even hearing the slingshot being pulled back to the firing of the birds to their simple laughter all catches the feel that is Angry Birds and brings out to a special level thanks to Virtual Reality.

There are a few things I would love to see get added. For one, leaderboards. Yes, you can if you want to, zoom through each level and be done. But if you had leaderboards to see who got the best score would just add that little special touch. The only other thing I would like to see added is possibly bringing all the other Angry Birds titles over even if that is by the way of DLC. Once it was over, I wanted more levels to play or additional DLC that adds new themes. Just imagine how awesome it would be playing Angry Birds Star Wars in Virtual Reality.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs proves that everything in Virtual Reality can be a lot more fun with new ways to play no matter how many times we may have tried. And sometimes we just need to escape in order to be shown the way.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/S, Oculus Go, and Gear VR on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
