Bloody Zombies – The Review

September 30, 2019 ·

Side-scrolling brawler games have been around for a long time. There is something about going around the different levels and fighting the enemies and racking up the combos. But when you add the zombies with online multiplayer and with VR, the Developers of Paw Print Games and the Publisher nDreams have something so special with Bloody Zombies that owning a PlayStation VR headset so worth it for times like these.

Bloody Zombies take place in London (yes something about London and zombies just somehow go together) and the place is overrun by well Bloody Zombies. With the city being closed off from the zombies spreading, we have our four heroes: Mick ‘The Brick’ Johnson, Rei Akari, Eddie Clarkson, and Desmond Teller (with their witty humor) who go out on a rampage to well stop the Bloody Zombies.

Now Bloody Zombies can be played with or without the PlayStation VR headset and does have online co-op, but I’m saying this now…when you play Bloody Zombies, you will want to play in VR. It just adds to the experience. The way the levels almost have a life of their own works almost too well and that is not a bad thing at all. The atmosphere just pops and I really appreciate the way the side-scrolling brawling with the VR aspect of the levels really shine. Another thing I really think is unique is the way if you play in VR that the character you select is also wearing a VR headset and it’s the small things that can really put a smile on your face.

When you start you will learn how to punch, kick, jump, uppercuts etc…basically all the moves you need to hopefully survive. But as you progress you collect these color skills that help you unlock even more moves and combos. And some of these glorious combo moves leaves an almost a swimming hole of blood to where I want to lay down and make bloody angels on the streets. Now you just don’t have to use your hands and feet…no…no…no, there be weapons to use. From swords to hammers to even of the throwing kind, Bloody Zombies is one of those games that you can just pick up and play and have fun. And that is what gaming should be and that is exactly what the Publisher and Developer have done. Putting the FUN in funeral for all the Bloody Zombies.

But what is a good brawler without some bosses? Yes, the bosses here look simple, but let me say that if you pay some close attention, there will be some flashback to the old arcade brawlers here with the bosses and that put a smile on my face and some memories with friends that I was glad to remember. So thank you Paw Print Games and nDreams for doing just that.

Bloody Zombies allows up to four players. If you play locally, only one can play in VR, but online all can be played in VR. As I mentioned you don’t have to play in VR as it is not required. But playing in VR you are able to look around to see who or what creatures may be headed your way.

With October and Halloween being here before we know it and when you add everything including the humor, level design, controls and combos, Bloody Zombies is what I was hoping for…a throwback to side-scrolling brawlers that you can play with friends or online all while adding zombies and blood and in VR. This is one game that will help you get into the spirit of the Halloween season along with just a fun game all around to play.

Bloody Zombies is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store and Steam. A review code was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I need to go rid London of these Bloody Zombies and learn some more awesome combos.
