Budget Cuts – The Review

October 15, 2020 ·

Stealth can be a good thing or a bad thing in Virtual Reality depending on how you are at it. But have you ever thought when you were working at an office and just some of the people didn’t sit well with you and how if given the only in a video game in VR type of opportunity, how you might plot your escape without being detected or maybe on a whim do what you could to make sure you never have to hear from those individuals again? Does Developer Neat Corporation (with the support of Coatsink) show us what it’s like to be in stealth mode and take out some robots along the way? Let’s find out with Budget Cuts for the PlayStation VR.

So before you begin, you will want to make sure that you at least have some space for your arms, because you will be attacking robots ( I mean you could try to make your experience all about not getting detected if you want to) with different objects and repeated stabbing actions may be needed. You just don’t want to damage anything or yourself now would you? You will also want to make sure your Move controllers are fully charged. Now that you have everything, let’s continue.

Budget Cuts is a stealth game first and foremost. Playing as an employee of TransCorp, you like what you do (or at least you keep telling yourself this) as it’s steady work and you know how to do the work. But like in life, when there is a more efficient robotic way to do your job, then you might looked to be replaced which is what is going on here. You are about to be fired. But it’s when you receive that phone call that you know things are about to get a little crazy. This voice who is referred to as Winta, is really there to guide you, gives you instructions, and clues so you can do what you can to uncover the truth of what is really going on here at TransCorp.

But you will not be simply just walking around and hoping your amazing quiet skills come into play…no that would not be much fun, but instead, it’s when you get the teleporter that things start to get interesting. With the teleport, once you shoot it, you are showing this glimpse of the area and see if it is safe before just getting into the unexpected which is really nice touch. But not only can you shoot straight or up and down and left and right, but you can rotate it to get into the more tricker spots when you really need to go unnoticed.

While a teleporter is an awesome device to have, you will need more to help you succeed in your Budget Cuts investigation. Your hands are gripping devices, a magnifying glass to read important messages, and an inventory system that I found I started collecting more things I found and didn’t need to. Keep in mind these robots, they don’t play around. If they get any sense of your presence they will come and try and get you. This is where the teleport can come into play to save you if you are in the right spot, but the robots can head to where you teleported to. The robots also carry firearms, so one shot and it’s game over as you will have to start from the last save point. But be on the lookout for any weapons you may find out such as knives and scissors as they come in handy for those sneaky attacks. And if you think that once you stab a robot with the knives and scissors you can’t use them again, you can, you just need to pull them out of the robot, and hopefully there are not others around who may be on to you or it could become a sticky situation real fast.

But since you are trying to get to the many floors of TransCorp, you are not going to be able to just teleport to those levels and that is when you really need to pay attention to the calls you receive from Winta as she will tell you where to go and how you will need key cards and access codes to gain access to certain areas like the elevators for example. As I mentioned it is a stealth game and there is something very satisfactory about sneaking behind a robot after teleporting, ducking around a corner and sneak attack the robots and watch all their oil just spill all over the place.

If you find yourself in the same spot of being eliminated, then maybe it’s time to start looking at a different path. The path from point A to point B is not always the best one to take as I found out many many times. Sometimes you might have to be more quick or find yourself having the patience to wait for that special moment before you are able to move on. And that’s what is great about Budget Cuts and making the choice yours. But regardless the path you choose, don’t be discouraged, just keep trying until you find your best route.

But it’s not all about sneaking behind and making that attack, but sometimes making that attack from a distance by throwing that knife for example, and making that direct hit can have the same satisfaction, but it’s when you miss that you may decide that your aiming and throwing may need some work, but in a fund determined way. But the other aspect of Budget Cuts is the puzzles where you will have to look for clues in order to reach the goals that are placed even if some may seem repetitive. But it’s when I kept getting caught that even though I was frustrated at times, it just gave me more encouragement to keep going to really find out what is going on at TransCorp.

With the main story you would think that all Neat Corporation was going to give you and I am happy to say that is not the case. If you would like some missions with new objectives and challenges, then step and play the Budget Cuts Arcade that you should really play on all the levels as it really is just the extra icing on the cake.

Let’s talk about the graphics which just from the gameplay videos you are seeing does not really do Budget Cuts justice unless you see them in VR. I never witnessed anything that seemed out of place and those red lasers from the robots really pop in VR. The sound is also well done. When Winta calls you and you pick up the phone close to your ear, she becomes loud and clear, and moving the phone away starts to lower the sound of her voice. I really liked hearing the sounds of the robots as I would sneak by and have the sound go from one ear to the other as well as the beeps as it was about to be the end.

Overall Budget Cuts is fun and will test your stealth skills and shows us with some patience, we can overcome anything in life no matter the negativity that may be searching for us.

Budget Cuts is out now digitally on PlayStation VR, the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. and also as a physical release at a retailer near you and will be available on the Perp Games store on October 23, 2020. A review code was provided.
