Captain ToonHead vs The Punks From Outer Space – The Review

November 9, 2021 ·

When you think of the word hero, who or what comes to mind? Would it be someone with great strength, maybe the greatest of minds, or maybe it could be someone we typically would not think to fit that role. Heroes can come in any form and any size. They could possibly be the ones we always thought of them even if they may not see it themselves. Sometimes it even might be the ones we wouldn’t think could be one and it turns out they were more of a hero than we could ever be ourselves. So does developer Teravision Games give us a look a the hero we never wanted but stuck us with them anyway? Let’s find out with Captain ToonHead vs the Punks from Outer Space for PCVR, Oculus Quest/Quest 2, and coming to PlayStation VR.

Captain ToonHead vs the Punks from Outer Space is a first-person VR tower defense game where mixing of FPS and Tower Defense where it’s going to be up to you to defend and attack the madness of a balance between action and strategy of taking control of towers as you play a hero that can use a variety of weapons. So before we begin, you will want to make sure of a few things. For one, find your favorite place to sit. I mean, when you have a game where it causes your crew to die because you didn’t fix the ability to microwave burritos, then you might want to sit for this one. Second, make sure your controllers are charged. Don’t be the one to let the hero down because you didn’t charge the controllers. And finally, just have some fun. With that said, let’s continue.

When you first start the game, you do get a brief tutorial of how to move, build your Toonrets, fire your weapons, collect scraps, and most importantly, embrace and enjoy the humor. You also learn that your name is one Elliot I. Salazar, janitor, who after not fixing so said the ability to microwave so said burrito which results in the crew, well how can I say this, no longer being alive, gets promoted to Captain (in fact, if having a T.V. on your head does not say, Captain, I don’t know what does) to stop one madman named Vorhees who as you might have guessed by now, is leading the Punk army from Outer Space.

Your mission throughout each level is to defend the Inner Cubes from being abducted by a variety of enemies of the Punk army that include crazy things like Terra-Sharks that move below the ground, Cyberchickens that try to grab the Inner Cubes up in the air, flying cats, and as you just saw, a T-Rex. To try and stop this army, you will need some weapons. You have your pistols, you can even throw chanclas, cause again, why not and it’s pretty fun to do, and you also have the Toonrets. There are a few variations of the Toonrets that include shooting rockets, freezing enemies in their tracks, and even can launch bombs. Each map has different areas where you can place the Toonrets, however, you have to collect enough scraps from enemies that you destroy. To collect these during the battles, you will use your awesome hammers that you created that are pretty much held together by whatever Elliot could find (the lights are held together by the looks of tape) and by throwing them to collect them. The longer you hold down the buttons, the further they can be thrown. The hammers are also used to build the Toonrets in the various spots on the map.

As the game progresses, so does the size of the map along with giving you even more room to build the Toonrets and that’s a good thing because what starts out as simple with one entrance for the enemies to come from, starts to have more than one place to enter. So you will be moving from different Toonrets and upgrading them as you try to destroy the enemies, collect the scraps as quickly as possible in hopes that the whole map does not become this chaos of enemies who end up stealing the Inner Cubes whenever they get a chance. Dang, you evil Punk army…dang you. If you feel really brave and full of confidence, then at certain times you can elect to unleash more enemies before the time. This becomes even more chaotic and allows you to test how truly of a Captain you really are.

In between each round, you do see how many Inner Cubes you saved, the number of surplus scraps you collected, and be teleported back to the station where you can upgrade your weapons, Toonturets, and even your Pizza Rocket (used to teleport the Inner Cubes back to the station for safety. Oh, I forgot to mention something about the Toonrets. They do have a function other than just firing when the enemies come by is that you can get a different perspective view from being higher as well as going on ToonRides. These rides allow you when your ToonRide bar is fully charged to lift your hands and take full control of the Toonrets for a limited amount of time. I will say this will come in handy when you have enemies and then the T-rex comes, but this also is a downside because if you just used it and then a whole bunch of punk army evil-doers comes in full force, you better hope your Toonrets jumping between each one all over the map skills are as great as the Captain is.

Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. I do really appreciate how each map is colorful as it does make it easy when trying to make things out while the action is going on. Even when I was at one of the furthest Toonrests on the map, I could still see the different enemies from afar. It’s not until you get closer are you able to see what enemies you are dealing with and when some enemies have a health meter that is being attached to them like a Macey’s Thanksgiving float, it is still easy on the eyes which many will appreciate. I do like when you are also back on the station and just seeing the small amount of detail like the pile of pizza boxes stacked up to even how well and clean your hammers look close up. The sound is equally good with being able to hear the different types of enemies even when you may be a distance away from all the action. The conversation between the different characters keeps the humor and the voice of Captain ToonHead, Daniel Amerman does a great job of keeping up the energy.

There are a few things that I hope to get added. For one, leaderboards. I know the focus of the game for the launch was the single-player aspect, but leaderboards would add another level of fun of trying to be on the top of those boards of who had the most points. Luckily, they are supposed to come in future updates. And finally, even more, crazy enemies and weapons. Even after the game is done, adding more weapons and enemies to the mix to go with the leaderboards would be interesting to see. There could be a leaderboard with a specific weapon or the amount of a specific enemy to hit. It’s just something to think about to keep the fun going.

Captain ToonHead vs the Punks from Outer Space gives us the captain we didn’t ask for or deserve but got stuck with. It brings the cartoony twist of fun to the tower defense genre and mixes and mashes it with the FPS genre. In a time where the world is still in chaos and our lives may be a little scattered, isn’t good to escape, let it all go, and just have some fun?

Captain ToonHead and the Punks from Outer Space is coming to Steam and the Oculus Quest/Quest 2 on November 11, 2021, and coming to PlayStation VR in 2022. A review code was provided.
