Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition – The PlayStation VR2 Review

May 20, 2023 ·

The sport of boxing is a very interesting one. Two boxers step into the ring hoping one of them will be a winner. The punches are quick and powerful. Sometimes the opponent will dodge what is coming at them and other times, not so much. But if you could step in the ring, how well would you do? Would it be a tie? Would you be able to win by TKO? Maybe, you might become the champion of the world. Anything is possible if you work hard. But does the developer Survios take us to the next round of the fight? Let’s find out with Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition for the PlayStation VR2.

In Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition immerses you in the pulse-pounding excitement of boxing with the cinematic thrill of a blockbuster movie, as you step into the ring as an aspiring boxing champion: train under Rocky Balboa, fight familiar and unexpected contenders across dynamic arenas, and establish your boxing legacy. So before you step into the ring, there are a few things that you should be aware of. First, clear any obstacles out of your way. You don’t want to step on or punch anyone and cause any damage. Second, stretch. You will be throwing punches and dodging opponents and you don’t want to get injured for real, plus, your body will probably thank you for it. Third, you can play sitting or standing. If you stand, please stay in the center of the play area. Fourth, make sure you charge those Sense controllers. You don’t want to be in that championship match only to go down for the count because you forgot to charge them. And finally, get ready to sweat and have some fun. With all that said, let’s continue…

Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition brings an enhanced and expanded experience including 4K and HDR visuals, advanced controller tracking, and impact haptics to name a few for the new and seasoned CREED players alike with additional game content, features, quality-of-life upgrades, and PvP cross-platform support. Utilizing the power of the PS5 and PSVR2, the Championship Edition pushes the excitement and challenge of high-stake matches in the ring.

The first thing you will notice when you start the game is important safety information. Read them, embrace them, and let them TKO you for the count as this is some very helpful information to know and to have. But when you click continue, you have that familiar look and sound of the MGM trademark that really helps start to set the tone. You then have a choice to make. Do you want to jump into your Career, jump into Freeplay, fight in some PvP, or do you want to set up how you like things in the Settings?

You might want to select Options first, so you can adjust the Gameplay settings such as smooth turn, stick locomotion, and even enable cross-play. Of course, in the Audio settings, you can adjust your audio levels, which by default, are all at 100%. You also have the option to turn on subtitles, if you would like. In the Controls settings, you can calibrate and view tutorials on how to play.

Starting with the Career Mode, you are instantly training. From swinging your arms like you are running on the Treadmill to punching a dummy torso to hitting the punching bag. Nothing like some good training to help get the blood circulation going. Then it’s time for a sparring match just to get you used to the movements and life of being a boxer.

Of course, as you start advancing in your career, you will have more training you will have to do, you will face tougher opponents, and fight in bigger venues. Bigger venues mean more people are watching. But this also means you get to be trained by non-other than Rocky Balboa who will encourage you along the way.

In Freeplay, you will select the site and opponent for custom bouts to challenge on your own terms. Included with the Championship Edition, you also have the Legacy story that is inspired by the CREED III movie that provides eight new chapters, three new arenas, and eight additional fighters. With the Fitness Mode, you can work on your Timed Sparring and Calorie Sparring to aim for your personal fitness goals. But what most players will want to take their chance on is the online PvP where you can box other players. It’s all fun and games boxing another player and feeling it through the haptics until you get your soul knocked out of you and then have to do a running motion to get back into your body before the 10-count so you can continue with the fight.

Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. Playing Creed: Rise to Glory on the PlayStation VR and then playing the Championship Edition for PlayStation VR2, I have to say that you can see visual improvement. Seeing the way the lights from the arena shine off the opponents and even the detail in things like the hair, seeing the bruising start to form from your punches, and even the rack of meat that you punch in some of the training looks really good. It’s just really interesting to see the amount of detail, no matter how big or small, was added. With the sound, there is something with the 3D audio and the Pulse 3D Audio Headset that hearing the punches go by you to the crowds cheering to even hearing Rocky himself coaching you on from different angles really is impressive and just immerses you into its universe.

Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition takes what we know and enhances it to the next round and gives us more to love. It provides a workout that your body will thank you for over time while keeping you engaged with every round. It shows that you can make something better without losing what works. In life, we try to do better, but sometimes we just need that motivation to show the world what kind of champion we can be.

Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition is out now in both Standard and Deluxe editions on PlayStation VR2 on the PlayStation Store and is also available for the Quest 2/Pro on the Oculus Store. A review code was provided.
