DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles – The Review

September 30, 2019 ·

Ah, cartoons. Some are so impressionable from our childhood that one may start to wonder and dream what it would be like to be part of that universe. One of those cartoons I loved was Voltron. Five pilots chose to command the Lion Force known as Voltron. Each of the pilots controls a different color lion. We have Shiro who controls the Black Lion, Keith controls the Red Lion, Lance controls the Blue Lion, Pidge controls the Green Lion and Hunk controls the Yellow Lion. Now Voltron VR Chronicles is based off the Netflix adaption of the 80’s cartoon. And I can say that Digital Domain has done an amazing job with Voltron VR Chronicles for the PlayStation VR.

“The Universe will kneel before me, it is my Destiny”

Now I am not going to give too much away as someone who finally has that moment of wondering what it would be like to be part of that universe as I mentioned earlier, I want you to take that wonder and experience the power of Voltron. You will be controlling Lance and as much as I love a good character who jokes, Lance here seems to take cocky to a whole new level and sometimes I just had to laugh and was waiting for Keith or Hunk to just ram their lions into mine just to see if Lance would be put into his place.

Voltron VR Chronicles does use the two move controllers and they work really well here. When flying in the Blue Lion, you would move your right arm up and your left arm down and vice versa to be able to turn and it made me feel like I was in control of the mighty Blue. The sound really adds to the immersiveness that is already experienced here from the shooting to the explosions to the strong voice acting.

Keep in mind this is Voltron VR Chronicles. Meaning when you play, don’t think of it as that’s it? No, think of this as the beginning. You don’t want to have everything right up front and the whole story told do you? Sometimes games and experiences seem to go for the rush factor and then it’s over with no real follow up and no real story to tell. So there should be more adventures that will allow everyone who loves Voltron and anyone who loves the opportunity to be taken away to another world and just for that time you are there, you are seeing through the eyes of the story. What Voltron VR Chronicles is what it wanted to be and what its fans needed it to be. An interactive story experience that brings you from your reality and into something special. I want to give a big applause to Digital Domain for taking the art style of this Voltron and incorporating VR and the 3D all while making you feel like you are watching the cartoon and at the same time part of that Universe.

DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
