Floor Plan – The Review

October 3, 2019 ·

Puzzle games can be fun. They are cherished by many. Your thinking, knowledge, and logic all tested. Your frustration can reach its limits just as well as your ability to overcome the challenges and succeed can be rewarding. So does Turbo Button’s Floor Plan for the PlayStation VR have the right formula for a fun puzzle adventure game in Virtual Reality? In one short answer, yes…yes it does.

So what really is Floor Plan? What do you do? Well, Floor Plan is a puzzle adventure game. It takes what worked best for the old point and click games and reimagined it for Virtual Reality. You play the entire game from inside an elevator. Yes and elevator. Your job is to move from floor to floor, find the items, and find the right connection of those items based on the floor. For a game that played in entirely inside an elevator, this is some of the most fun I have had with a puzzle adventure game.

But what makes Floor Plan different? It is the detail to the levels of the floors and the almost removal of what normally would be frustration and replaces that with them wanting to get things figured out and have fun while doing it. So you will need to grab either your Dualshock 4 controllers or the Move controllers to help you grab, collect, and push the buttons to different floors.

So what is the goal of Floor Plan? You will need to build what some might say is a spacesuit while others may say it’s a pressure suit. Now how do you build this suit? Great question and I am glad you asked. You must go up and down each of the floors gatherings items in order to get parts of the suit. Once you have one of these items, you just need to go to the top floor with the suit and point to the item that you found (left boot for example) and point to the part of the suit that you have collected.

It does sound pretty simple, but there is so much more to it. There is going to be some trial and errors along the way. I mean you wouldn’t want it to be so simple that there was no challenge, would you? So just so you are aware, you will be trying the items that you collect on everything, until you get that hint of what to do. For example, what would a cold snowman need to keep warm (No I will not spoil anything for anyone, but there is a hint button on the elevator buttons if you so desire)?

Floor Plan does something we have not seen in a long time. It takes the frustration out of what normally could be a bad experience and turns it around into a challenge worth accepting. It is not every day that we come across something that seems so familiar but yet feels so refreshing. It allows us to try things in an engaging way of cleverness and fun. And if Turbo Button keeps in the direction they are going, I cannot wait to see what they come up with next.

Floor Plan is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Rift/S, Oculus Go, Gear VR on the Oculus Store, and Steam. A review copy was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy.  Until next time, I am going to see how many ways I can interact with each floor.
