Megaton Rainfall – The Review

Whenever Superman came out and we saw him fly, it was one of the coolest things ever. Able to fly not only on our planet but in the peaceful breath taken space. When I saw him go over Earth with the Sun just over the planet, I have always wanted to fly. I thought one day we will be able to fly. Well, it may still be a long time for us to fly like Superman, but what Pentadimensional Games has done with Megaton Rainfall is given us that opportunity to fly like a god and how sweet it is.

When I first wrote about Megaton Rainfall back in August, I said “With Immense Destructive Power, Comes Great Responsibility”. I am now going to change it to “With Immersive Immense Destructive Power, Comes Great Responsibility”. I will get more into this a little later, but I am just saying this now, that the whole responsibility part may have been thrown out the window in my case because if there is an alien invasion, I for one will not be in a building. So I may have occasionally on many more than one occasion, decided to take the evil route and teach the humans a lesson. Megaton Rainfall is that fun.

But what is Megaton Rainfall? Well if the Earth was under attack and Superman was not around, then you would be the savior of the human race. You defeat the enemies all while trying to protect the planet without too many casualties. Sound simple. Well, it’s a simple concept, but actually trying to save everyone, well that may just never happen. Between the enemies and you flying through and using your powers, buildings will collapse, deaths will happen and smiles will be on your faces.

When you start out, it might be a little slow. But this is in no way a bad thing. You will hear a voice that will help guide you and help unlock your powers. But once you get in the game the action does pick up and let me tell you, flying around with this much power is just what you would hope it would be. Nine missions in total with each completion, a new power gets unlocked.

As the action heats up, so does the music which it reacts to it. Megaton Rainfall puts a new meaning on city life because when you are playing an action game such as this, you cannot help but notice the soul of this city. Traffic is flowing, people walking and yes you can hear their screams. But that would be too simple. Yes…yes it would. So why not head to a different city or fly between buildings? Want to go to space, to the moon, the sun? How about flying right over oceans? It’s all here and it’s that well made.

Now, Megaton Rainfall can be played with or without the PlayStation VR, but you will need the Dual Shock 4 controller. Which is not bad, it works. I just hope that there will be an update to be able to use the Move controllers to add to the already excellent experience. But if you play in VR get ready for the best experience. Pentadimensional Games has found the sweet spot for VR movement as there was no motion sickness of any kind and I did not feel uneasy at all and that is important when you are flying around like this.

I mentioned the music. The music here is just beautiful and really adds to this majestic VR treat. It’s one of those soundtracks that I wish would be released as a stand-alone so for those that would like to buy the album or use their favorite music streaming service, I could really enjoy it outside of VR.

With Megaton Rainfall, you are getting something really special. When you add leaderboards, score attack mode and a difficulty unlock, you are getting a lot. The complete freedom of movement, an unmatched scale of destruction (you know you will want to destroy the buildings just because you can, it’s ok…really) an awesome soundtrack and amazing visual effects. Megaton Rainfall is one of those VR packages worthy to be wrapped up and then opened on Christmas morning.  I just really hope there will be some future DLC plans.

What you may not know is that Megaton Rainfall was created by just one person, Alfonso del Cerro, over a five-year span. This part is very true including the engine. So just take that in for a minute. One dream…one person and the result is one of the best superhero games to ever grace our presence.

Megaton Rainfall is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store and Steam. A review code was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I have some more buildings to go destroy…I mean to protect and soar upon those leaderboards.
