Operation Serpens – The Review

April 7, 2022 ·

If you knew of an organization that was so evil and so ruthless, do you think you could take it down? Do you think you could do it alone or would the right team, the right force need to be put together in hopes that the root of all evil within that organization would finally be stopped by any means necessary and at any cost? Sure, it’s fun to think about and try to plan what our moves might be. But does developer GINRA TECH shows us how the craziness and fun of a shooter? Let’s find out with Operation Serpens for PCVR and Quest/2.

Operation Serpens is a fast-paced action-arcade shooter. As you join an elite unit, you will grab weapons and shoot at enemies as you try to dismantle the evil Snakes Organization. So before you go in acting like you are Rambo, there are a few things that will want to be aware of. First, find your favorite area or place to sit and just get comfortable. Second, don’t forget to charge your controllers. You don’t want to enter a room to try and take out all the bad guys only to not be able to use your weapon of choice because you forgot to do so. And last, but not least, have some fun. With that said, let’s continue…

When you first start Operation Serpens are welcomed to the training area. Here you have your basic controls of grabbing, shooting, and reloading which is done by moving your weapon to your waist, using the left thumbstick to move, and recenter with the Y button. But, if you are playing in the Seated Mode, reloading is done by pressing the A or X buttons, crouching, and turning is done with the right thumbstick. The developer has made the controls as easy as possible so that anyone can pick up and play. Then it’s a matter of just picking up some weapons to get in some target practice before starting your mission to put down this evil organization.

But once training is over, it’s not time to just sit and wait for something to happen, remember, the Snakes Organization is trying to do things their way and it’s up to you to try and stop them. This is where Captain Joe welcomes you to the team you joined, the elite force known as OPERATIONS SERPENS, to immediately try and stop the bad guys and the first of high-value targets. Just don’t forget to look at your hand so you can check on your health from time to time.

When you are trying to take out the bad guys, you will want to make sure of three things. One, don’t shoot the hostages. It’s just not good for the end result and then your conscience will start making feel bad if you truly have a soul. Two, don’t forget to reload. And three, don’t forget to move. The bad guys are shooting at you. So just try not to stay out in the open too long.

There are also flashbangs that you can use that when thrown will cause this slow motion of time which is pretty fun for those dramatic screams. But you also have to be aware of your surroundings. Not only could there be hostages, but also bombs that if you accidentally shoot them, it’s game over. So don’t shoot hostages or bombs. A real-life lesson that anyone can appreciate. And remember kids, knowing is half the battle.

At the end of each battle, you are returned to base and this is where you can start the next mission, play the Zombie Survival mode, try out new weapons, and even play some online co-op. I did try on multiple attempts to try and see if anyone else was on, but I had no luck. But I will say that the Zombie Survival mode is kind of fun as the zombies are not only trying to get you, but they can shoot weapons as well. Oh, you have a selection of weapons and can pick a different or the same weapon for each round. But after that round, the weapons that you used, cannot be used anymore and that can put a damper on things when you just found your favorite weapon you like to use. So think ahead.

Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. When looking at the graphics, they are simple, but they work really well on the Quest 2. The colors are vivid and the words are very easy to read. When using a flash-bang and seeing the different facial expressions and movements of the enemies was amusing and made me laugh. I also like how the Zombie Survival mode had this visually gloomy feel to it with the different shades of color that really added to the atmosphere. With the sound, hearing the different weapons fire gives them just a slight differential tone to them. Hearing the enemies and the different sound effects that just sounded like it would be funny to be in the same room was amusing and then when you have the not overpowering soundtrack playing to add to the action, it just rounds it off all pretty nicely.

There are just a few things that I would love to see. For one, I loved the comedy aspect of it. It just throws everything in from the sounds of certain areas to just the way the narration is presented. I just wish there was more of it throughout. Second, the tutorial does show you how to climb, but I just wish there were more areas for it. I think it would be good to see additional levels (such as with level 7), being thrown in where you could use this more to your advantage. And lastly, multiplayer. I do hope that Operation Serpens comes to other platforms such as PlayStation VR/2 and Viveport so that more people can play and that cross-platform would be a feature if this did happen. The different types of modes that you could have within multiplayer could be a comedic blast of a time.

Operation Serpens brings what it was designed to do and that is the fun of what it was set out to be and doesn’t try to be something it’s not and that is simple gameplay, non-stop action, and comedy. We sometimes take the seriousness of our everyday lives a little too much and forget that there can be fun thrown in to help offset and give ourselves the balance that we need. And at this point, couldn’t we all use a little more balance in our lives?

Operation Serpens is out not for the Quest/2 via Oculus App Lab on the Oculus Store and Steam VR.
