Raw Data – The Review

September 30, 2019 ·

Virtual Reality. It allows us to do anything we want. We can let out our aggression in new ways and not get in trouble for our actions. There are different experiences you can have. You can drive, enter the world of horror, and you can even shoot things and I mean shoot things like never before. And what Survios has done with Raw Data has taken what we know about the first-person combat genre, turned it on its head, threw it out the window, locked all the doors, and gave us something very special on the PlayStation VR.

When you start Raw Data you learn from the start that things are not what they seem and it’s up to you to get to the bottom and delve into what is really going on behind this cover-up of a company called Eden.  Is it somehow going to give immortality? What type of information are they trying to collect? What do they need from us? As you go from stage to stage of VR greatness trying to take down Eden and it’s secrets. And all while playing, I thought how awesome Raw Data would be as a Terminator story.

Before you begin, you are allowed some training. Here you will get to check out the different weapons and how each class will best fit your needs. There are four classes:

Bishop – The Gun Cleric: The dual weapon master. He has the power of Time Warp for that slow-motion aspect. Charged Shot for that powerful blast and Bullet Storm, where you can spray the enemies with a fury of bullets.

Boss – The Demolition Man: If you want stuff demolished, Boss is your man. Armed with his shotgun has the power of a Quad Chamber to shoot four shells. Nade Launcher to shoot those plasma grenades. Iron Fist to destroy whatever is in your path.

Elder – The Archer: One of the most feared. He may be elderly, but his aim cannot be matched. Armed with his bow, he can equip the Charged Arrow that will surely cause a bang. Multi-Shot Arrow for when one arrow will not be enough. Holo Decoy to help distract the enemies to help succeed.

Saija – The Katana Master: The daughter of Elder and the Katana that will make you feel like a Jedi. Armed with Katana, but can have dual Katanas for when one is just not cool enough. Katana Throw to throw like a boomerang. Telekinesis for when you need to use gravity on your side.

For me personally, I went with Saija. Honestly, there was something so special to swing the Katana around like it was a lightsaber and deflect bullets to shoot them back at the enemies. Thank you Survios…Thank you!

While you clear out each stage, at the end you will see a briefcase that you must grab to finish the stage so then you can upgrade your abilities. The only thing is due to the distance the PlayStation Camera uses, some times trying to grab the suitcase can get a little discouraging as you are having a blast while defeating the enemies that works so well, but to then try to grab a suitcase that seems a little difficult at times. I am sure a patch will come to help with this very minor issue and that is really the only issue I had.

Sound-wise is really good here. Even with the bullets flying, blades swinging and moving around, I was able to pinpoint where the enemies were coming from. This is very important in a game like Raw Data as you are moving along with shooting and swinging and when you add explosive arrows to the mix, it just all comes together with the way it should.

Visually Raw Data looks good with the amount of detail that was presented with all the action that was going on. Even when parts got dark and able to see the eyes of the enemies clearly along with the lighting that just added to feeling like I was really there was really the way VR needs to go and it’s just going to keep getting better especially with the Pro-Patch coming soon.

Raw Data includes ten levels of insanely good fun and there are also leaderboards which I like as it adds to that replayability so you can go back to try to beat whoever beat your score. What I wish was included was the co-op multiplayer and PVP battles. We may still get them in the future. I mean we can hope, right? Because if you do add the PVP batters in VR, that would just make Raw Data that much better. But you do get a lot here; Immersive VR…check. A story with heroes…check. Being able to move in 360 degrees with enemies coming at you…check and leaderboards…check. It’s all here and for that, you are truly getting an Intense VR Sci-Fi Combat game to add to your library that will be experienced for a long time.

Raw Data is out now and is also available on the Oculus Store and Steam. A review copy was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I need to get back to Eden Corp. and see who I can knock off the leaderboards.
