Snow Fortress – The Review

October 1, 2019 ·

I really like this time of year. We have Winter, we have the holidays and sometimes some of us get snow and some of us live where there may not be any snow at all and that can be ok as well. For those of us that may not get snow and have that white snowy Christmas like some of us remember from our childhood, Mythical City Games just may help you relive some of those childhood memories with Snow Fortress for the PlayStation VR.

When you first start Snow Fortress you are greeted by your new friend Fox…because he is a fox…so why not…nevermind. You are given three modes to select from,  Snow Fort Survival and Fortress. The controls are very simple where you hold down the trigger button on each Move Controller that is represented by mittens in the game so that it will generate a snowball. This way you can throw as you see fit.

Snow Fort is where you build your fort as you try and take down the evil Snow Man’s fort while trying to hit him. It will take a couple of times for you to hit him in order to move on to the next round. What I really like was being able to unlock the slingshot which added that nice Dennis the Menace feel to it. When your fort starts to fall apart, you do have a can that you are able to use to freeze up your war zone of a fort. As you move on the levels they difficulty will increase. Nothing like building a fort only to have two evil Snowmen throw snowballs at you from different angles.

Survival is just what it sounds like. You must survive the waves of evilness as you realize that these Snowmen are truly evil as you look into their black coal eyes and see that they have no soul as they keep coming at you.

And Fortress is a mode that has a tower defense twist to it.  You start off with a pre-made fortress and Snowmen of your own (the kind that has heart and soul, not like the evil ones) to help protect from the evil Snowmen and their evil fort. Keep in mind that this level is locked until you survive to level 10 of Survival mode.

As far as sound goes, I really enjoy the calming music. And hearing the snowballs fly by to when they actually hit you sound very realistic. Immersive wise, I really felt like I was in the snow having a snowball fight. With the snow coming down as you are throwing, slinging and defending against the snowballs coming at you.

There are a few things I wish were here and the first thing is just something I wish was in the game. With about a week and a half till Christmas, I would have loved some Christmas music. I know you can’t really have Frosty the Snowman or Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer playing due to rights, but even if the team themselves sang the songs and have that playing would add more to this. The other thing that is missing is an online multiplayer. Yes, Snow Fortress has cross-platform play with the Rift and Vive so you can have snowball fights with your friends. But an update is coming to add this and when it does, I just ask for cross-platform play as well as that will make Snow Fortress even more magical on PlayStation VR.

Mythical City Games have done a wonderful job of recreating that special childhood memory and allowing children of all ages to bring out their inner child, put on a hat and mittens and want to go build a snowman and have that old school snowball battles. Sometimes it’s the simpler experiences like Snow Fortress that helps remind us that we were all kids who loved this time of year, who counted down the days until Christmas and couldn’t wait until Christmas morning to see what Santa brought us. Then go out with your friends in the neighborhood and play with our new toys only to build those forts and have our new toys defend them and we would, in fact, be the ones hiding behind our forts and throwing those snowballs. And at the time we didn’t realize that we were making the memories that today we wish that we could relive again. And for that, I applaud Mythical City Games for allowing us to be that kid again at a time when some of us need it most.

Snow Fortress is out now for PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, Steam, Viveport, and the Microsoft Store. A review code was provided.
