Speedy Gun Savage – The Review

April 21, 2021 ·

If you and a mechanical robot were aboard your ship flying through space, what do you think you would be doing? Would you travel to different worlds? Would you try to reach plaid speeds? Would you try and collect as much money as you could while collecting bounties? There could be countless possibilities of what your task could actually be and it’s always fun to try and think about what if while we use our imagination. But does developer Gamitronics show us what it’s like to become a bounty hunter in space? Let’s find out with Speedy Gun Savage for PCVR.

Speedy Gun Savage has you playing as an Alien Bounty Hunter, Wolf in the on-rails VR shooter. You will be sent to multiple planets so that you can earn bounties and strike fear in all those that choose to do the wrong things in life. But luckily for Wolf, he doesn’t have to go at this all alone as he does have a robotic friend/sidekick known as 3V4N or Evan) that helps Wolf by giving you important tips so that you can make sure you are successful in collecting those bounties. So like any good bounty hunter, you want to make sure that your training is up to par. So before you jump into the action, take Evan’s advice and head to the arcade machine to get used to a few things.

So as you can see, the controls are pretty simple. Looking at the wave point, you press Y to move, Strafe with the right thumbstick, use the trigger buttons to fire the weapons (don’t worry they will auto-reload) and press A to switch weapons. Within your weapons you have your pistols that have 6 shots in each one, shotguns have 5 shots in each one, and your futuristic-looking rifle has 50 shots to use. But you have to be careful and will want to make sure each shot counts as much as possible because there are not an unlimited amount bullets to be had. So once you have the basics down, it’s time to collect your first bounty. Lucky for you, Evan can tell you about each o the bounties to be had.

But one thing you need to know about Wolf and that it’s lonely in space. Yes, Wolf has his ship, has his friend Evan, and even makes his own rules. But Wolf is kind of well, he has a drinking problem and I bring this up because during the gameplay it seems that his drunken state at times will cause some of the vision to become well blurred it seems. This doesn’t last too long, but keep this in mind as it will factor in at times when you are playing.

I will also say there is at the current state, no difficulty level, so expect to die some until you get the hang of things. You can sit while playing and hide behind obstacles, but there will be times where you will need to stand to get the enemies who are at a distance. But, be careful of the enemy fire as you will need to dodge and move so your life does not end. Once it does end, you have the option of continuing with the last checkpoint. If you decide to go back to the menu and then decide to go back to the game, you will have to start the level over. So just be warned about your choice before making it.

Now, you might be thinking that the gameplay videos so far look the same and that is what I was thinking as well until I got to the next area where things did change up that added a minecart, skellingtons that jump at your minecart, and that shot arrows as well as bats that throw things at you. So remember, keep going because you just might be surprised what Gamitronics throws in.

Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. The graphics are fine when playing in VR, however, there will be some that say the graphics could use some polishing. Looking at some of the cowboys and environments in the first world did kind of remind me of those old-school shooters and that’s not a bad thing at all as you are trying to dodge the enemy fire as well as taking out the enemies as you can almost like one of those theme park ride shooters in a way. But when you get on the minecart and how it’s darker, the skellingtons look pretty good and when they jump on the minecart and you can see them up close, it makes you appreciate everything. Listening to the sound of the game from the beginning and had the eerie sci-music playing to when you get to a different world for a different bounty and things become a little faster paced with the metal music playing. I do like how the sounds and music complement the level that they used with.

There are a few things that I hope get addressed. Remember this is a Steam Early Access game and with that, things will get better. First, there were some times during the levels where the aiming seemed a tad off. Not all the time, just a few times and this can easily be adjusted. Second, there is no difficulty level. Some may feel that they may be fine with that, while others may like the different options such as new players not only to shooters but to VR shooters might appreciate the options if they were there. Third, when you get to the bosses, if you die, you have to go through the intro to that boss level again. I am sure many would appreciate the ability to be able to skip and get right into the action as the bounty bosses can be tough. Fourth, I know this is a single-player game, but it would be nice to have some leaderboards just to see who is the top Alien Bounty Hunter in the galaxy is. And lastly, more planets. I would love to see more planets with more bounties to collect and use the money to upgrade to new gear so you could have new challenges that could be added.

Speedy Gun Savage presents a way for us to just have some fun shooting at some virtual things as we try to avoid what is coming at us. It is not trying to be perfect, as we ourselves are not perfect. Sometimes we may try and take ourselves too seriously when we should take a step back and try to limit the conflicts in our own lives so we can keep moving forward without the distractions that are trying to hold us back.

Speedy Gun Savage is out now on Steam Early Access and will also be coming to PlayStation VR. A review code was provided.
