Spuds Unearthed – The Review

August 22, 2020 ·

Think about your childhood and the way your imagination ran as you tried to be creative. Some used the green army men or maybe even had action figures you would use while using the outside or inside as the battlefield. But I remember getting creative and using like soup cans with some paper and colored on the faces or even boxes of pasta that when combined with twigs as arms, became giants that I was sure would be to my advantage. Either way, it was just some good old fun to be had. So does Developer Gamedust allow us to use what normally wouldn’t and show us some good old fun in Virtual Reality? Let’s find out with Spuds Unearthed for the PlayStation VR.

Spuds Unearthed is a wave shooter where it’s not a war of humans as that would be too easy. No, you see this is a war with Spuds, yes, Spuds that you will need to build your own Spuds tribe as you try using strategy and god-like elements to make your planet the best that it can be. So before you go into battle and try to rule the galaxy, make sure both Move controllers are fully charged and your in a comfortable setting as you shoot your way and throw your Spuds in what will be a hopefully glorious victory for you.

I am going to say this upfront, that even though there is some type of instructions, there is not a real tutorial per se. If you are victorious (and if you are not at the very beginning, do not give up), you may earn tokens which will allow you to upgrade things such as turrets and spuds. These can result in Spuds with different abilities to different was to build up your turret. For example, in the beginning, you have to crank your turret to fire, but upgrading may result in having to fire using a pumping action or even flames (just too bad you cannot combine the flames with Spuds to have super fries). But the instructions don’t really say where to put the tokens and does not really hold your hand to make sure you have the understanding. Which to some, being thrown in is sometimes the best thing. But before jumping in, just read the instructions that are presented and you should be able to catch on with everything else.

One of the things I liked is once you are ready for battle and before you actually get into the waves, you will see planets floating around that are yours for the taking. Once you select one, you can see who the planet is owned by, the difficulty, and how many spuds will be rescued. And when you can see your name of the one that claimed the planet, it does give you this satisfaction regardless of what the difficulty says. When you first start, you won’t have any Spuds to join you in battle. You do have two turrets that you will need to crank in order to fire them. But go too fast, and the turret overheats, so you will be alternating between to them.

When you first go into battle, you might think you need to hit the buildings where the enemies are coming from, don’t. I tried this at first, many times, and didn’t notice any damage happening. Just concentrate on the enemies coming towards you and after a certain time, as long as they have not done too much damage to your base, you should have that sweet sweet victory. But this is Spuds Unearthed and you want some Spuds on your side to help you in that victory. So after you collect a Spud, you can place it in front of you so that you can take it into battle. Then when the action hits, all you have to do is pick them up and throw them into the battlefield. Spuds each have their own special powers. For example, one may have a gun that can start shooting at the enemies that come close while another may contain a shield barrier to help protect. Just keep in mind that even the Spuds themselves have health and will need to come back to base. Once their health is up, prepare to throw them like grenades.

There are some things that I wish were included. For one, just a little bit more interaction with the tutorial. For those that may not have played a wave shooter before or not sure how everything works, a practice tutorial round would be beneficial. Second, I would love to see some leaderboards so you can see who the top Spud player of the Galaxy. Third, it would be awesome if we could design our own planets to challenge those other players and have our planets part of the leaderboards. Fourth, I did have a couple of times that no matter where I threw the Spuds, the didn’t land where I threw them, and sometimes they landed within my base (which they still protected when the enemy got real close). I am sure this can be addressed with a patch. And finally, just the ability for us to create our own Spud just for the fun of it.

Spuds Unearthed looks good while playing it as well as the sound. It gives you escape with Spuds with meaning and are willing to fight and protect all while having some some good ol fun at it.

Spuds Unearthed is out now for PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
