The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure – The Review

October 7, 2019 ·

When we last left the world of Angry Birds, I reflected on how the pigs just wanted to live and have their place in society and not have to worry about the anxiety of the birds crashing into their handwork structure of life. But does Developer XR Games, Publisher Perp Games, and in association with Rovio Entertainment, bring the world of Birds and Pigs together? Let’s find out with The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure for the PlayStation VR.

Now before we begin, I want to state any video footage for this review was made possible by XR Games. The reason for this is The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure is a social screen game and by that, the PlayStation VR cannot stream any footage as it has to focus on the PSVR unit itself as well as the social screen aspect. So with that, there is also no sound and that is one of the main reasons why the footage may not be as long.

So with that said, make sure your DualShock 4 controller is fully charged and…oh…I forgot to mention that there is one piece of footage I was able to actually get and stream and that is at the very beginning and it is the trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 2, which if you haven’t seen by now you really should, but I’m here to help in case you haven’t, so please take this time to enjoy…

I will say I kind of like having a trailer before playing as it gave some familiarity with what is going on.  After the trailer, there is the main screen, but that’s when the streaming will cut off and go black. So I just wanted you to be aware if you had any intent on streaming, you will need to get a capture card. So now that we have that underway and your DualShock 4 controller is charged, let’s continue on.

Now normally in Angry Birds, you do have a slingshot that you sling the birds into the innocence of the pigs. But here, the Birds and the Pigs are joining forces inside a submarine to help stop a new threat that is trying to end both the Birds and Pigs way of life. So since we are now joining forces, that means that not only you the VR player will need some help and this is where you will want to gather some friends, family, pets if they are trained to do so (probably not real pigs and birds because that could either be a total mess or could be the most epic viral thing).

So you, the VR player is the ship’s captain, Leonard (innocent pig) and the crew (non-VR) around you will be taking the roles as the birds. I will say that if you don’t have any friends or family or trained pets to play with you, you can still play this single-player, but you will have a little more work to do switching between the Captain and the crew. I tried this and it works surprisingly well. As the Captain, it will be up to you to fire the plungers and torpedoes. But it’s not just as simple as firing…oh, no…that would be too easy. The crew must gather the crates in order to make the plungers and gather the boxes of torpedoes and place them in the correct spot in a decent amount of time all while trying to avoid TNT and other things in the ocean that could damage the submarine.

Depending on the level, you may have conveyor belts that help bring the crates to you and depending on the level, is where the placement of where to can collect the crates (blue and green) into the machine that then will make the plungers that the crew (non-VR if you have friends and family or special pets or if it’s just you, you will hit the X button to switch) will then need to load into the firing chamber so that the Captain (VR player) can then use to shoot crates that are on the outside so that you can collect not only treasure but also trash and TNT. If you happen to get trash or TNT, then the crew will need to pick those up and put them in the trash furnace that also depending on the level, will be in different parts of the layout and hopefully, you can get rid of the TNT before the countdown reaches 0 and then boom. If things go boom, then it will be up to the crew to try and repair what was damaged all at the same time of trying to hopefully collect what is needed on the submarine’s set path.

But on this set path, there may be obstacles that block your way and if your submarine hits it, then that’s more damage to the submarine. This is where the torpedoes come into play. Not only do you have to make sure you have enough plungers ready to collect the crates, which in order to bring them in, you have to rapidly hit the X button, but also make sure you have enough torpedoes in order to blow up the obstacles (walls or gigantic tentacles) and enough plungers ready to collect boxes that are on the outside in the ocean. Now, depending on what type of crate you are trying to pick up, it will determine whether it will be the crew or the Captain that can interact with it.

Not only is your magnet of a weapon can fire plungers and torpedoes, but it can also actually be used to pull in certain types of crates you collect. Treasure can be pulled in and then shot to be placed so you get credit, but not the TNT or things can go boom. The crew can pick up the TNT to place it in the furnace as well as the Captain can pull in and shoot the trash into the furnace if your crew is just a little to busy and cannot get to it and may need some help. Oh, that trash that may be collected from your plunger excitement, if you leave it and not trash it, you will get points deducted. So take this as a lesson and don’t leave trash around.

One thing that I appreciate is how new things keep getting introduced such as being able to add multiple silver blocks into a gold one so you can get more points or how when you may use a machine that will present a crate of randomness. Adding these small, yet important elements give the gameplay a refreshing taste that is not held down by repetitiveness. So thank you XR Games, thank you.

Once the story is completed and bonus stages, you are welcomed with even more challenges to try and master which is good for those that love to try and complete everything at 100%.

There is just one thing that I wish would have been added. For one, not everyone is going to have a family or friend around (or a highly trained pet) to play and some of the levels can be a little easier if you had multiple people playing. Sometimes it’s much easier to have an online friend or family member available and for that one or two trophies that require multiple people and having online added would be a nice feature to have.

The overall look of the game has this fun and welcoming vibe to it with the sound that matches. I loved being able to see the detail on Red and Silver as I played as the Captain and even when I had no choice but to have Red sacrifice himself with the TNT as he went into the furnace before the boom that would have ended my mission due to the ongoing damage I received, it’s nice to see Red just get shot out and he was still ok. The music was upbeat and was just fun to play along with. And add the small simple sounds of the machines making the plungers just adds to the experience. Sure, it could have been skipped over and forgotten, but sometimes it really is the most simple things that help make it complete.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure is a fun game and is even more fun when you have more friends and family to play with. It just shows that when you work together, anything is possible.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure is out now on PlayStation VR. A physical edition review copy was provided.
