TO THE TOP – The Review

October 3, 2019 ·

Sometimes something comes along that really surprises me in Virtual Reality. Sometimes it’s not the escape, sometimes it’s just the ability to move and get to the goal that really can draw you in and make you want to stay and before you know it, hours and hours have passed. When you add in a soundtrack to keep you moving and immersive experience and you just might have a winner on your hands. So does To The Top that is developed by Electric Hat Games and published by Panic Button deserve your time? I am very happy to say that yes it does and you should not hesitate.

So you might be wondering what To The Top is all about. In short, its part being a superhero with abilities that normally you would have and then using those abilities to climb, race, jump, and do what you can to get past the obstacle courses, beat the challenges that are presented, and complete it all in the fastest times. Sound simple right?

But before you really jump in, you have a choice. Do you want to use the Dualshock 4 controller or the Move controllers? Each will take some getting used to, but honestly, it’s not difficult and after a few attempts you really start to get the hang of it. So thank you to the developers for allowing such a simple and yet fun control scheme. So the question is will you be Team Move or Team Dualshock?

So how do you move? How do you get around? These are some of the questions I had before even starting. Thankfully the very simple yet important tutorial will show you the way. Just keep this in mind. Anything in blue you can attach and grab on to. Green means you can skate across the area (just grab in the direction you want to go and skating you will be. See told you, easy).

Now you might be thinking where I said superhero. Yes, you do get this feeling like you are one. You can fly…yes fly with the power of your jet hands (what a thrill it is to use these) and what do we all want to do if we were a superhero? We would want that superhero landing. Well, you can achieve this while you are leaping through the air like The Greatest American Hero, you are able to land where you look.

One of the many things I appreciate here is the level designs. When you have a game like TO THE TOP with the freedom of movement along with obstacle courses, the levels have to be well thought out as they play an important part in the game and experience. So hats off to Electric Hat Games on well designed and fun game levels.

Just when you think you know everything there is to know, there is still more to know and appreciate. You see TO THE TOP is not just a simple go from point A to point B type of game. You wouldn’t want that, the developers and publishers wouldn’t want that. Besides the option of going from start to finish, each level will also include time trials, collectibles and something hidden. But it is very satisfying knowing you have found a secret area when you were not even attempting to look for it.

It is not only the well thought out levels that compliment the balance of the game, but it is all the added bonuses you can do that really adds to the replayability here. If you want to just get through the level as quickly as possible for the best time, then go for it. If you want to have the best possible time while doing multiplayer who truly is the best, then go for it.

Yes, multiplayer is here and alive. But I would strongly recommend you going through the training and completing some levels just to get you used to how some of the levels may work and to also get familiar with the controls. Now once you feel you have your confidence up and it is strong, get ready for the next step up of fun (not like you were not already having fun). In multiplayer you will cooperatively with up to 8 other players and place items around the level to help you gain the advantage to get to the end of the level in the best possible time.

You do get a lot for what you pay for. 30 levels of play,  over 30 customizable options to unlock, 3-time goals to beat per level, online leaderboards and multiplayer. It’s all here and everything you would want. I did forget one thing, the soundtrack. As well as the balance of the levels compliments the design of the levels, the soundtrack that features artists such as CapyacMirror MaskNight DriveSlooomSip Sip, and coming in a future PlayStation VR update, Future Islands, just adds even more to the balance.

We sometimes try to find that balance. It can be in our personal and professional lives. Sometimes we dream about it and wish upon a star in hopes it comes true. And then sometimes, just sometimes we might not be presented with the final version the way we envisioned it. But sometimes it is that piece that complements and fits in our own puzzle of a gaming life. And isn’t that we all need sometimes?

TO THE TOP is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store and Steam. A review code was provided.
