Twilight Path – The Review

November 24, 2020 ·

When you think about life, what comes to mind? The story that is being told? The impact we make on others? What about the journey? When you really think about it, many people may have many ideas and beliefs on what they feel is the right one when it comes to this subject. For me, it’s really about the path that we take that leads on that journey in a way that we impact others. It really can become this deep and emotional ride the more one starts to think about it. But does Developer Charm Games show us what it’s like to take the ride between the real world and the afterlife? Let’s find out with Twilight Path for the PlayStation VR.

Twilight Path is a fantasy adventure that is set in the surreal realm between the real world and the afterlife where you will solve puzzles, restore ancient structures, and meet spirits all while hopefully getting you a way back home. So with that said, make sure your DualShock 4 controller is charged, have a seat, get ready for some beautiful immersion into Virtual Reality, and know that I will now share anything that would be too revealing as I do not want to spoil anything for anyone. With that said let’s conitnue.

When you first start Twilight Path, you are introduced to a tale. This tale is not too far off as it really does tell the story about how every soul has a path that they must follow as they go from one realm to the next until those paths meet at the same place. This place is one of eternal balance between light and dark and that realm, this place is called Twilight. It really is a place from souls to Gods can dwell and that should have balance until one felt the greed. But it’s when the tale that has been told and you wake up getting to The Curio Shop that things may not appear for what they really are.

One thing that you will notice about Twilight Zones is not only the beautiful realm that is Twilight (more on this in a few) but the puzzles. The puzzles are not ones that will make you overthink, overly challenging, or make you want to quit. They just have this balance that focuses more on the progression of the story itself rather than focusing more on the puzzles in order to advance the story. Some parts of Twilight you will not be able to reach but will need to use the T button on each Move controller in order to activate special abilities in order to help solve the puzzles.

But it’s when you meet the two main companions, Barque, the navigator of this Spirit Realm and Singe, the fire spirit, that you start to realize that a true friendship is starting to build here. While Barque is the type to keep things on track and try to do the right thing, Singe likes to add comedy to the mix. Think of it as Singe is like Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy and Barque is more or less the Time Keeper of the realm and you having this special ability of time like you were Dr. Strange and somehow you all entered Return to Oz and trying to figure how to get back home through the path of the living through the realms of the afterlife all while having a deeper meaning then what was thought.

Looking at the graphics, Twilight Path does bring beauty and sharpness to the table. It allows for colors to really be present here. Even the details of the puzzles and the different characters you meet all have very good detail. Sound is also something that is very special here that is not over bearing and doesn’t really drown out other noises that you hear within the time of the game. It is really a calm and relaxing sounds that compliment the details that were added.

There are a few things that I would like to see added that hopefully will be addressed in the future. What I mean by this is Twilight Path is somewhat short. I am not saying to do not experience this, but I wish I could have spent more time in the realm and wish I could have had more of a back story with the characters, but understanding that sometimes it’s not having to know everything and just enjoying the journey can be satisfying in its own right. Keep in mind, that Twilight Path was on PCVR first since October of 2018 and if all plays out, then when Trial by Teng is released with the continuation of the story allowing even more time in the afterlife, solving more puzzles, and even meeting more creatures and spirits will surely be a welcomed and pleasant surprise and just how magical Twilight Path actually is.

Twilight Path may not be for everyone, but it is something that has this special quality about it. For those hat are wanting to experience Virtual Reality for the first time or for those that really love Virtual Reality no matter the age inside or out, given the opportunity, it will surely find a place in the hearts for those that are willing to give it a chance. When you really think about it, it is quite poetic the way Twilight Path is introduced and is presented, but also heartwarming and very well may be therapeutic for those that may have lost a loved one and to know that even though the body may be gone, their spirit still carries on until we all can meet again.

Twilight Path is out now for PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Rift/S on the Oculus Store, for Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.
