Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War- The Review

October 4, 2019 ·

Back on March 7, 2017, we had a chance to go to Mars as you copilot a ship. Decisions had to be made within a certain amount of time or it was mission over. The way you got ready for the impact on Mars to controlling a rover to even a shooting battle allowed us to escape our reality in Unearthing Mars. Now Winking Entertainment wants to give you a  chance to remember how things used to be on Earth and on Mars. But does this journey bring the war to us or do we bring ourselves to the war? Let’s find out with Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War for the PlayStation VR.

Before we begin you have a choice. Do you want to go into this with the DualShock 4 controller or do you want to lock and load with the Aim controller? Go with the Aim controller if you have it as it does enhance the experience. With that said let’s continue on…

So what is Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War about. You play as a commander from the future that is reliving the past through the memories of the Team Leader named White Gun. Think of it as a virtual history lesson of sorts to find out what happened in the past as you try to uncover the mysteries of both Earth and Mars and how things used to be before the history as you know it. So since you are playing in Virtual Reality to have your level and enemies than virtually generated before your eyes make for an interesting twist. I had to sit back for a moment and just think about it and thought this is a pretty cool way of going about things.

I want to talk about the Aim controller for a second. It works perfectly here. From the aiming to the movement to the controls all work like they should and as I hope they would. And when there are points that you are jumping and it does this slow-motion so you can seem like you are this sci-fi movie action hero is awesome. So Winking Entertainment…thank you for making sure the Aim controller aspect was a focal point.

You will be teleporting as you follow in the footsteps trying to relive what happened, you will have the opportunity to come across new weapons that each have their own feel to it. Shooting an automatic weapon compared to one that has to charge up to fire really makes you think of what weapon will be used depending on the situation. Add that with a sharp focus that will allow you to slow things down for a second to focus on the weaker points of the enemies is a nice touch except when you have to wait for it to recharge only wishing you didn’t use it previously because you didn’t really need to.

Something I started enjoying, is when the character you are playing is questioning if he has to jump or has to fight a boss and the sarcasm that is received started to put a smile on my face cause if the situation was reversed and someone asked me if they had to do these things, I would probably have the same amount of sarcasm to give. When you get to the point where you have to face the bosses, there may be some of its weak points behind them. You will just need to get the feel of that boss and learn out to duck and move so when that important time comes for you to take that shot that defeats the boss, you can be satisfied with the fact you stuck with it and you showed it you would no longer be the victim…that today is your Independence Day.

Sorry I had to. But I really had fun with Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War. From the sounds of the gunfire to the not overacting to slowing down as you fire with marked targets of the enemies, the sound is pretty good. Graphically speaking, enemies were clear as they should with the action going on. Environments to some, may not be a certain level, but you have to remember, you are in Virtual Reality playing within a world where the levels are virtually generated in front of you. So with that in mind and that understanding that it all works.

At times when a sequel is made just to be made with no understanding of why Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War bridges a gap and answered some questions that I had from Unearthing Mars and did it this way of having to go to the past to understand. It just goes to show that sometimes we have to step back to go forward so that we do not allow history to repeat itself.

Unearthing Mars 2: The Ancient War is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on Steam and Viveport. A review code was provided.
