Virus Popper – The Review

September 8, 2020 ·

Ever since the early part of 2020, the world has been a crazy place with COVID 19. From schools for the most part going to virtual, to even lockdowns, to more and more people working from home, a virus has taken over in ways that we have not seen or been a witness to in our lifetime. So does Developer Starcade Arcade give you the opportunity to learn about hygiene so you can attack the virus head-on and pop it into non-existence? Let’s find out with Virus Popper for PCVR.

Virus Popper is an educational VR game about personal hygiene and safety where you are an alien and it is your job to pop the virus with different objects and try to last as long as possible without trying to become infected. So before jumping in and practicing your waxing on and off or painting the fence like you are the Karate Kid, you will need to do the number one thing to prepare for this battle and that washing your hands.

Now that your hands are clean, it will be up to you to pop the cute little virus and because you just washed your hands, you will not want to touch the virus as that would be a bad thing. So grab any cleaning objects that may be floating by you to help aide you in your battle. These objects can be a variety of things from spray bottles to sponges and take out the virus. But be careful, those cleaning supplies do not last forever and once they are gone, you better hope you can survive until more show up. So dodge what you can, destroy what viruses you can, and just do not become infected.

When looking at the detail that was put in (and keep in mind this was all done in one weekend), everything from your alien hands to the viruses that come at you is detailed. I like the fact that Starcade Arcade tried to add some fun to the chaos in the world by adding some of the catchy music to just having the viruses have eyes and wanting to give you a hug. In fact, that’s all they want to do is show their love. But then you have to realize that their love can make you sick and you must pop them and as they go away, they give you that one last look like “why would you” and “how could you” then you start to feel bad only to realize that there is more and more of them. Another thing that I liked is the leaderboards. Adding this adds to the fun and to see who can be the best while fighting the good fight. If there was anything I would love to see added is probably more environments and maybe some different expressions on the viruses just to add to the mix.

Virus Popper gives us the chance to take on the virus head-on in the safest way possible all without actually becoming infected ourselves. Sometimes when the world turns itself upside down, it’s good to know that we all have a common goal in life.

Virus Popper is out now on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport for free.
