There are many choices when it comes to Virtual Reality headsets. You have PlayStation VR, headsets from Oculus, HTC, Primax just to name a few, but there has been a variety of headsets from makers such as HP, ACER, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung that have made Window Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets. Think of them as the more budget as well as premium headsets that primarily worked on Microsoft’s platform that allowed inside out tracking as well as requiring lower pc specs to work. Back in 2017, Samsung released the Samsung Odyssey and in 2018, the Samsung Odyssey+ with an updated display to eliminate any Screen Door Effect, better tracking, and for some, a better fit.
But now it looks like a patent that was applied for back on January 3, 2019, and with a recent authorization announcement date of January 17, 2020, a patent HMD from Samsung from China’s National Intellectual Property Administration aka the CNIPA, has released a few concept designs of this patent for the Announcement Number CN305560319S for an HMD. But something to look at is the design of this HMD and the amount of tracking sensors that could possibly be used.
By looking at the design and the sensors, there looks to be two on the upper sides with possibly two additional in the front for each visor per se. When you look at the blue and orange of the colored pics, we get a clearer idea of what everything could look like. At first, to me, it looked like a close up from the movie The Fly starring Vincent Price…I mean ideas have to come from somewhere, right?
But this is very interesting if Samsung does release this as I for one want to know more about the specs, cost, and the ways that they could improve on the Samsung Odyssey and Samsung Odyssey+. Regardless, it is always and exciting times when it comes to Virtual Reality and the ways to enhance the ways that we can be immersed into the experience.
