You had a rough day. Your day could be so rough that your wife or girlfriend left you. You had a bad day at the office…what about if your pet just passed away…or what if you attempted to sign up for Amazon’s new service where a stranger enters your home to deliver a package and you come home and everything is gone except that package of limited edition Big Chew gum your ordered…that is a rough day…a rough day, in fact, you are going to go drink, go to the bar, and get into a fight. Well in Drunkn Bar Fight from The Munky for PlayStation VR is everything you would hope for and more.
Before we start, please do not go drink and go to a bar to fight. No one is suggesting it…no one is promoting it..wait..well the name of the game is Drunkn Bar Fight, but that’s as far as you should go. Plus this is not Road House and you are not Patrick Swayze, unless your real name is Patrick Swayze, then by all means if you actually find a bar named Road House…
Now that is settled, grab both Move Controllers and continue on. Before you enter the bar and start a brawl, please note the two signs on the left and right of the entrance. You will see how to move back and forth. The Square and X on the Move Controllers allow you to move. The direction you are facing while wearing the PSVR headset is the direction you will move towards. So again, Square and X to move forward and backward and look in the direction you want to go. Simple concept. But the reason why I repeated this, is like me, you might forget with the action going on.
The concept is simple…walk into a bar and before you just start attacking anyone standing around with anything you want, make sure to turn to the jukebox and pick a song. Once you have the tunes, then feel free to use anything you want. You can use your fists, the baseball bats in the glass case, that walker in the corner, beer nuts, darts, beer bottles, the person you just knocked down…yes you can. Grab a dart and throw it in their eyes. Grab the person and throw them in the glass, why not? It’s a fun way to let off some steam. When you first start you have a bar directly in front of you and it starts out with one person minding their own business. But you had to come in and I guess they reminded you of that relative at Thanksgiving that you never wanted to speak to in the first place because they owed you money from so many years ago. But hey who’s counting right?
Once you beat one person it moves on to the next round where there are two people and then three and four. All this sounds simple, but when you start getting hit and hearing the heart beats, your time of being knocked out is close and then it will be lights out. But once you clear the levels of the main bar, you have other locations you can enter. On the left is the saloon where you can use laptops to guitars. On the right is the upper rich bar. I say go in that bar with an attitude cause you were not on the list, to begin with, and start doing whatever damage you can. From cell phones to knives.
If you have some friends over and some spare Dual Shock 4 controllers, they can join in the fun. They will be playing as the people in the bars that you are attacking. They will not be able to pick up any weapons, but it still can be fun.
The controls are a little awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it and start grabbing anything you can, it starts to be real good time. Sound-wise, each noise from the glass breaking to the wack of the pool cue sounded good. Graphically Drunkn Bar Fight is where it needs to be. It’s not trying to be the huge visual masterpiece and it doesn’t need to be nor would I want it to be. It’s just fun. When putting on the PlayStation VR headset for the first time and standing outside the bar, I felt like I was in a city and going into that fine establishment. The characters have their own unique look yet bar stereotype feel to them. The guy with the tie, you could almost feel that he hated life. The only thing I wish was the ability to fight with other VR players and global leaderboards to see who would be the Drunkn Bar Fight champion.
Drunkn Bar Fight is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, and Steam. A review copy was provided.
