Farpoint – The Review

September 28, 2019 ·

Welcome to The Roughnecks…

Ever since playing first-person shooters and seeing movies like Starship Troopers, I knew that one day we would get that feeling, that wow factor…and that day is upon us and this is just the beginning. Ever since Farpoint was announced at E3 2016, this has been one of the most anticipated games for PlayStation VR and now that it has finally been released, it does not disappoint.

I don’t want to spoil it for those that have not yet got Farpoint yet, so I am not going to talk about the characters as that is part of the magic as you explore and progress. What I will talk about is just how awesome it is. Farpoint puts you on this stranded planet, as we have all seen from the videos and pics. Once the game begins to the time you are on the planet you are on that planet. Farpoint is truly immersive and if you have a PlayStation 4 PRO, you will definitely be in for a treat. The PRO adds to the ability to bring this game out and showcase what it’s truly made of. From dust particles to the rocks, playing this in VR is the only way this could have been played.

So yes, this is an FPS (First Person Shooter) and what do all FPS games have in common, a gun. While you can use the Dual Shock 4 controller, the Move Controllers are not supported, but you will WANT to get the Aim controller.

The Aim Controller changes the game on so many levels. We have been using the DS4 controller and PlayStation VR together ever since it came out in October. But with the Aim Controller in hand, while you are in that world, on that planet, you are holding that gun in a way that can only really be told is experienced on PlayStation VR. The Aim Controller is so accurate and it really only takes you a few minutes to get used to the layout of the Aim Controller which has all the buttons of a DualShock 4 controller, but laid out in such a way that is so comfortable that once use it, it will feel so natural. The front of the controller has an analog stick and acts as the left portion of the DualShock 4 controller and right above the analog stick as the share and options buttons. On the back as the analog stick and surrounding it are the x, square, circle and triangle buttons you would find on the right portion of the DualShock 4 controller and yes the analog buttons can be pressed in to help you run.

The great thing about the Aim Controller is the software is open source, so don’t think that support will stop with Farpoint. So if you plan on getting Farpoint, you are better off cost-wise to get the bundle that includes the game and Aim controller.

While there is the single-player campaign which is awesome, there is a co-op mode where you and a friend can battle waves and see who can climb that ladder of greatness. When you start a co-op, you’re in a space station where things can break and where you can adjust your settings. You can make yourself 4ft to what seems like a giant and also select how you want to turn. I really suggest that you don’t do smooth to start if you are not prone to motion sickness, but try to set it on a big step and you might find it to your liking. But again each person is different, so try the setting that best fits you. When the co-op wave starts, there is something that you need to be aware of…FRIENDLY FIRE. Yes! Friendly fire is on and can take away from your multiplayer points. But sometimes you may need to shoot your friend just because and plus it’s funny.

With all this said, Farpoint and the Aim Controller needs to be experienced and needs to be owned. It’s one of those games that makes you appreciate the art that we all love, gaming. From the dust particles to rocks to the gameplay to the Aim Controller, Impulse Gear has done something special and I and many others want to thank them for this and look forward to what they do along with the future of the Aim Controller.

Farpoint is out now on PlayStation VR. To learn more about Impulse Gear, please visit their site and make sure you like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, and follow them on Instagram.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy.
