Sometimes when entering Virtual Reality, we get introduced to a world where things seem as calm and peaceful as some of us would like. Sometimes we go around admiring all the beauty that is bestowed upon us with that warm and satisfactory level of happiness. But sometimes the world that we want to live, gets interrupted by smelly evil orcs that want to ruin your day. So what does one do when one is faced with smelly evil orcs that want to rain on your parade and destroy you? You must fight to protect the world you just were introduced to. So does Developer Trickster Games allow you to enjoy the beauty or will you be left defending what still needs to be explored? Let’s find out in Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler for the PlayStation VR.
As I mentioned this world I entered of Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler is very peaceful. Here I am acknowledged by something saying we have reunited again. Not only a beautiful world but a welcoming one at that. One of the things I really like when it comes to Virtual Reality is movement. How well do I get to move? One of the questions I ask is this going to be more of a free roam or is it more click turning depending on the game as the way you move can make a difference of how the experience may be. I also really enjoy it when I am able to look in the direction I want to go and be able to move a little more freely and I am happy to say that Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler does allow for this and it works very well.
But what do you do in Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler? I mentioned orcs and how they want to ruin the beauty of this place. It is your job to take care of these orcs to the best of your abilities…with weapons. You will need to move, dodge, swing your sword, shoot your bow and arrows and whatever else weapon and scrolls you may find to help you in your quest. Using both Move controllers and using the Move button to move or teleport works without a hitch. Walking around you look with the PlayStation VR headset in the direction you want to go and it has this fluency that I really enjoyed.
I am going to make a suggestion. When you play in Virtual Reality, you have 360 degrees around you that you need to take advantage of. Do not sit and play as orcs will come behind you (and they will come from behind and to the sides) and remember they are mean, they smell, and they are evil…evil I say. One of the things I really enjoyed about my experience is the changing of the weapons. I can go from a sword and shield to a bow and arrow just like that. There is just something about shooting arrows at orcs in Virtual Reality that works very well. But that can easily make you want to run-up to the orcs and kick them off the cliff because some of them can shoot arrows at you, some can throw things at you, and some like to try and kill you with a sword. And as I mentioned, switching to your shield and sword will help in this matter as the other orcs who decide they are better than the arrow firing orcs, want to come up to you with their swords. “I say no…oh no, you shall not” as you swing your sword, stab your way, and delete any and all orcs that may stand in your way.
But I know what some may be thinking… a wave of orcs…defeat and repeat. This is true, there are waves of orcs that you must defeat and repeat, but what if it was not the same game every time? What if each time you played there was a change? But what if I were to tell you that not only are there changes, but where you attack counts more than others. What I mean by this is if you are attacking an orc with arm protection and you hit the orc in the arm, not as much damage would happen as say hitting the orc where there is no protection. That is exactly what is going on here which is very refreshing.
One thing I appreciate is the limited amount of tries you have. Trying to get to the portal and having to defend that portal until it charges while being attacked or I should say surrounded and attacked by orcs while wait for the charge to complete gave me this filling of accomplishment, defeat and had a touch of overbearing (in a good way) as I felt while my life drained that these orcs were in fact infected and they just wanted my brain and just have my dead body to feast on.
Another good thing is the progression. You are able to modify the weapons. However, you will need some money, but luckily you can earn that from defeating the enemies to even finding chests to open. Not only will you find money, but health and other objects and weapons (dual arrow guns for the win) can be found along the way which comes in handy when you are in battle and you just need to run away to be safe for a moment to regather your position that is trying to be violated by the smelly evil orcs.
Let’s talk about the graphics. Something about the style of art that is used keeps drawing me in. Seeing the size of the levels makes the journey a welcomed one. This is not the type of game where you are going to go by and normally just admire the plants or rocks as it gives you an expectation of what is to come. I also like the individual health bars on the enemies as it helps you to plan and strategize your attack.
Sound-wise the orcs do have some nice lines about how your death will be met or how they are assuming going in on what they will do to you. So you can either take it, embrace it, and use that against them or hope that what they say is not true. Just remember their screams are their battle cries and feel free to make your own. The music just has that calming RPG adventure tone to it that adds to the grunts and moans of the orcs. Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler does offer a nice selection of features. You get 35 levels to complete with 18 weapons to unlock with unique powers, 9 different quest types, 5 regions to explore, and 2 game modes all while adding a different game when playing. There is something that I wish was added was the co-op. For some reason, this was left out. This would truly be amazing to go in and battle orcs with a friend. Maybe in a future update, this can be added to be able to complete the experience.
Trickster VR: Dungeon Crawler is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A review code was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I have more smelly and evil orcs to defeat.

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your
articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything.
But think about if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos,
this site could definitely be one of the greatest in its niche.
Great blog!
Thanks for the suggestions. But there are always pics and videos in every article, review, and interview. What else could you be referring to?
