Blind Spot – The Review

November 16, 2019 ·

Our past, present, and future can be a puzzling aspect. When we are younger, we don’t think about how things may affect us in the future. We can look at our surroundings and relationships now and think about the past and how things could have changed so that our present selves may be in a better place and hopefully the choices we made and continue to make a change what might happen for a better future. It is really quite fascinating when you think about it. But does Developer Unlimited Fly Games and Publisher DeerVR Games allow us to view how things used to be in this story-driven mansion? Let’s find out with Blind Spot for PlayStation VR.

Before we really get into Blind Spot, you will want to make sure both Move controllers are fully charged as you will be using them to move, use the phone, crouch, use the flashlight, and interact with objects that will all help you discover the story of what really is going on. As you start, it really is a tutorial of the controls and how they work before actually starting.

Now that we have the controls underway, let’s continue. In Blind Spot, you start out playing as the brother who wakes up in this storeroom where you find a cell phone. The cell phone does play a very important role in the entire story as this is the way you actually receive more details of the story via texts. Which when you think about how technology is today, it is a great way to incorporate the story. The thing with the texts is, you don’t know who is on the other end and all you can see is Unknown Number. As the mystery person at the end is sending you texts stating they know where your sister is, you are able to pick the pre-text response. This does add some confusion about what is going on, but it is done very well, that it kept me wanting to learn all that I could and actually care what was going on around me as I was starting to question some things.

I will say one thing about the phone. Not only does it contain details about the objects you may encounter and pictures of the images that can lead you in the direction to help solve some of the puzzles, but I really like how it sort of projects into a bigger screen so everything is clear and well-positioned. In fact, I want my next phone to have this option and want it to include the awesome battery life that this phone shows in the game.

I did mention puzzles (I will not spoil them for you as that is part of the fun) and the ones throughout the mansion do range from basic to really making you have to think about them a little bit more. There is nothing wrong with having to use your brain, but some players who think it should be just simple puzzles where you flip a switch all the time is not going to get that all of the time here in Blind Spot. There is one puzzle in the library where you do have to adjust the levels of the bookcases to match the diagram of the layouts. Yes, layouts. In this particular puzzle, it is split into two parts. I will say that all you need to do is pay attention to the diagram and maybe the texts as well as pay attention to certain objects that may indicate that you can interact with them and you should be able to solve not only this puzzle but the others as well. But these puzzles also play an important part in the story as it intertwines with what is going on, which I do like. You will start to discover certain rooms and the secrets from the past that you may or may not have been aware of within the mansion.

But with all the texting and puzzle-solving to help elevate the story, there is another aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed and that is seeing your past through images of flashbacks to help you remember in a way and just when you think you may have a question, your phone buzzes indicating that you have a new message that helps answer some of the questions that you may have.

Now, of course, I am not going to spoil things for everyone, but Blind Spot does flip the switch per se, as you get into the 2nd chapter. It will still have a familiarity with it, but it may help answer some of the questions since you first started. With that being said there are some things that I wish were added. First, in the game, you are walking. There is no option of maybe speeding up the walking which on one hand I get as you want to take in all the mystery that surrounds the mansion, but it would be nice to at least have that option (which may be coming in an updated patch). Secondly, the phone never leaves your left hand. Maybe it would be more of an issue of trying to put the phone in your pocket or hide the phone, but that would be a nice option as well as some people might want to hold and interact with objects in both hands. And thirdly, Blind Spot comes with chapters 1 and 2 with chapter 3 coming as a free DLC. It would be nice to have all three chapters that I hope to have more of the flashbacks to encounter. But remember the rule, good things come to those who wait.

I want to talk about the graphics and the sound. When I was playing at the very beginning, I couldn’t help but admire the atmosphere. Seeing the rain come down as I looked up to see the way the lights were used in the different rooms to even seeing the moonlight trying to pierce through the windows was really well done and when you add the sound that matches that atmosphere, it does make you really appreciate the work that went into this. Hearing the almost a Cirq du Soleil type of vibe was very welcoming to the library to almost this eerieness as I was in the room with the paints really rounded the experience.

Blind Spot allows us a way to see the past while in our present of trying to solve the puzzles of the future while holding the sense of mystery within the heart of the walls of its residence.

Blind Spot is out now on PlayStation VR and will be available on Steam on February 6, 2020. A review code was provided.
