Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR – The Review

Everyone come and sit. I want to tell you a tale of a famous outlaw. One that knew had to shoot, one that knew how to be a legend, and one that knew how to tell the truth. He used to fight in many wars, from the Lincoln County War to the wars at the local mall. You see, this regulator did what he did not because of wrong vs right…no, he did it because this is who he was. His guns were mighty and futuristic and…and they could talk and they could sing…yea that’s it…they could sing like nothing else. As you see this is the tale of one of if not the greatest outlaw who ever lived or was it?. But does Developer MiroWin allow us to relive the days and tell the tales? Let’s find out with Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR for the PlayStation VR.

I am going to say this. If you are given a bucket of popcorn that you can eat while hearing the story is pretty awesome. Ok, now let’s get back to the story. Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR is a story of Grandfather telling his grandson about his glory days of the Wild West. As you relive the action in this shooting gallery of enemies, you start to hear the story get a little more exaggerated to help make the Grandfather’s side of things be bigger and better than well they might actually have been.

But being a shooter, you will need some guns aka Move controllers charged and ready to fire because the enemies will be firing back. But what I love about this, is that you deflect the bullets as well as dodge them and you don’t have to worry about reloading as you have unlimited ammo.

And when I say deflect of ammo, I mean you can deflect it with your weapons. So when enemies are coming at you from both sides or from above or below, just remember, for the most part, you do have a weapon in both of your hands. So feel free to aim in opposite directions while you dodge some enemy fire that at times seem to be coming from multiple directions. So if nothing else just swing your weapons and pray that you took the right pill before entering this matrix of bullets firing. It really is a good time to be had here.

Listening to the conservation between these two is pretty humorous and it never really misses a beat. The Grandfather will start talking about impressive his weaponry was and then this is where Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR starts to add even more fun. All the classic Wild West weapons are here. Uzi guns, grenade launchers, weapons with different ways of firing, and even guns with electric shocking abilities really add the exaggeration of the story that is being told.

Enemies come in different shapes and sizes. Some have body armor or a helmet that needs to be shot off, others may throw dynamite while others may be flying shooting drones. Yes, drones were a very important part of who was able to win the Wild West. Do not underestimate the power of truthful storytelling as it can paint a very accurate picture.

As you are busy trying to live up to the strong and accurate representation of your legend, if you happen to die, you are given a chance to restart the level at a lower difficulty. And I applaud the Developer for pointing out that you decided to take the easiest of all difficulties so you can do your one-shot kills just to make your self look and play better. It really all just comes full circle.

After each round, you are scored and rewarded on how well you did with a star scoring system. This is where you can decide if you would like to go back to the lobby or continue on.

Let’s talk about the graphics. The weapon design is very detailed which I really enjoyed. Seeing the difference in each weapon and you can tell that there was some time put into making sure everything was close to perfect as possible. The different scenes seemed to go with the story that was being unfolded. There were some parts that from the distance may have not been as clear, but that is ok. With all the action going on, I wasn’t really trying to pay too much attention to distance as I was just having too much fun.

Sound-wise, the background music was right at the right level. Hearing the drones fly and come from different directions, such as underneath, is a very nice way of using the audio. The different weapons had this distinguished sound about them that was also nicely added. Nothing was too overbearing as everything from the music, sound effects, to the storytelling was just at the right levels.

If anything, I would love to have leaderboards added here and see who really is the best in the world. I would also love to see Aim Controller support. I know having a weapon in each hand is important, but there are times where you use both hands to hold one weapon that I thought the Aim controller would be amazing here. Hopefully, there will be some added DLC in the future, because I would love to continue the story, no matter how much it gets exaggerated.

Guns’n’Stories: Bulletproof VR shows that you can have fun with the story as well as the gameplay. Stories don’t always need to be taken so seriously to make a mark even when they are made to seem bigger than they actually are. And isn’t that something some of us could do more of, take ourselves less serious and still be able to make an impact?
