If you saw something without even knowing anything about it, how intrigued would you be? And once you have gotten just a glimpse of what it was about, would you turn or away or would you be willing to step out of the safety of your boundaries in order to fully embrace it? Sometimes when we look into something that we normally might not, it may turn out to be something we enjoy. So does Developer Fast Travel Games give us a world to embrace and enjoy? The answer is yes. Let’s find out with The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets for PlayStation VR.
The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is a puzzle game where the narration of the story being told by your Granddad while you interact with the environment with both Move controller in front of you all while trying to find all the stolen pets and hopefully learn a strong and powerful message along the way.
When you first start out, you are back in your childhood bedroom and hearing your Granddad go through this memory lane of the times that appears to mean a lot to him. You will notice the covered up paintings that are the gateway to those memories that you will need to find all the pets within each one before you can move on to the next.
Once you have entered the world, you are welcomed with some narration that helps ties the story together and seeing a floating island that is yours to interact with. You can spin the island around as you try and search for the pets. But some pets are easier to find than others. Some pets will require you think (but not too hard) as there are the puzzle aspects to The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets that given the scale of everything, play out very nicely and don’t really cause any frustration to arise.
As you try and search for the missing pets and solve any of the puzzles, there is also another aspect to be on the lookout for and those are the coins hidden throughout each world. These coins are not necessarily out in the open for you to just see, but are hidden in many different places. But how do you find them you might be wondering, that is part of the fun of it. Interact with everything and you are sure to find some of the coins, but to help you, there is this sparkle that if you can find them, will help reveal the coins. Now, the coins don’t really do anything other than add more to try and find and is a nice touch as Fast Travel Games could have you just searching for the pets and nothing else. This is a fun way to add some additional fun along the way and I am glad they added this.
Now, I have mentioned interacting a few times and I am going to say to not rush through this tale. Embrace each of the worlds and see what each has to offer. There are many things that you can just touch or pick up that could be part of the bigger puzzle or just for the fun of it. If you see a submarine, touch it and see what happens and where it may go or if you see a wand and a hat, find out what happens when you try and make magic. In other words, let your curiosity just be free and have some fun.
Let’s look at the graphics and sound. From a VR standpoint, the graphics are very clear. Each world and even in your childhood room the amount of detail and immersion that is presented is really well done and would only work in Virtual Reality. Seeing the way the pets act when they are found to the adorable sounds that they make to the music of Wintergatan and sound effects all around you as you interact with different elements in the game, really shows the amount of time and effort that Fast Travel Games has put into their work. The only thing I would like to see is additional DLC and be able to explore more of this world.
The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is enjoyable and fun for all ages, but there is also a message that is being presented that should not be ignored. For some, the message might be the memories from childhood are remembered, while others who might have had or been shutout of someone’s lives can find that bridge to communication before it might be too late.
In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I missed a few coins that I need to go and find.
