VR Apocalypse – The Review

October 4, 2019 ·

The future can have many outcomes as it has not been written yet. Anything can be possible. But we knew they were coming. We knew those aliens would be invading Earth. Lucky for me, the year 2027 was going to be my year. I was able to score a contractor job from the Nextgen Games. I just wonder if this contractor’s job would be any good and could I make a difference. But as my new adventure begins, would it all be what it was cracked up to be? Let’s find out with VR Apocalypse for the PlayStation VR.

So as I asked what this project VR Apocalypse was all about, I was told soon my questions would be answered. I just kept thinking to myself, what did I get myself into as they put me into this drone?

So as you can tell, VR Apocalypse has you playing as a contractor as you pilot your drone through a Virtual Reality system in order to prepare for an alien invasion by virtually destroying all the aliens you can while destroying the nests that the aliens have placed. So what happens when there is the word of a possible invasion? The United Nations would need to get involved and hire the best in order to make sure the Earth’s defense is where it needs to be and make sure that we continue to be who we are…citizens of Planet Earth and to do this, Nextgen Games is recruiting the best. But they are not just going to send you in battle and risk their drones being damaged. No, I would need to prove myself and prove myself I would. Just like Grandpa Duke when he told me the tales of his time as part of the elite special force called G.I. Joe. R.I.P. Grandpa Duke…R.I.P.

But in order to have one prove themselves, one must go through training and that’s what I did. As I started my training, I noticed one thing that was on point and that was the movement. I was able to move and turn with this smoothness that I feel might just be comfortable for any level of Virtual Reality player and that is important. So good job Nextgen Games…good job.

I was given my number…pilot 72734 and accepted. Finally, acceptance in life and I can now mark that off my bucket list. But I wonder what happened to the pilots before me? I guess since I was accepted, I was about to find out.

As you can see, you will need the DualShock 4 controller for this one and you will use your head to move the weapon which all works really well and were spot on in VR Apocalypse. For some that may not be used to moving and controlling the weapon individually, it may take just a little bit to get used to it, but once you do, it will just flow with ease. Just make sure to hit that L1 for any speed boost attempts you may need.

But as my training ended it was my time to enter the first mission. The first thing I noticed was that there were these names presented to me. These other pilots must have either earned a contract as well or there will be a ceremony to be had later. I just hope I would be joining as a resting party.

From my first mission, I knew it was not going to be easy as these aliens would be very protective of their nests and any detection of a threat, they seem to want to come in herds to destroy that threat. Finding powerups such as shields and time extenders was nice and they did help when I was being surrounded. But my first mission was a success and placed in the top 6. My question of if these other pilots were alive was still not answered and I fear what may come. As I entered the next mission, I had a strong feeling that my worst fear would be one that I hoped would never become a reality.

Once I lost, I felt bad. I mean, I let the whole world down. But to come up and see in words that you could not miss that the world was destroyed and to hear how I failed…it was a wow…geez thanks moment.

There are some things I wish that could be added. I would love to see more variety of aliens. You could tell that they were aliens, but there was just something that I would love to see is more variety of different types of aliens. I would love to be able to visit different parts of Earth trying to defend against the aliens and also destructible environments would be awesome. I would love additional music. Yes, the music that is included does fit with the theme, I would just love a little more or at least the ability to add my own music to rock out to as you take down the enemies and their nests. I would also love to have the ability to change the difficulty. When you add that with the clock going against you, more enemies as you get closer to the alien nest and add that your weapon has to reload, VR Apocalypse can be very challenging at times.

But what we have to remember is that this a Virtual Reality game of a Virtual Reality simulation and just like how it’s possible the military is using how we play games as a possible way to train, in the year 2027, we could easily be contracted and trained in this same way.

VR Apocalypse is out now on PlayStation VR. A review code was provided.
