There is something about being having only two minutes to make that play. Two minutes to get your team on top or it can be the longest two minutes if you crack under the pressure. But can the idea of playing Football in Virtual Reality to become the best two minutes by combining the two actually work. Well, it seems that Truant Pixel may just have the winning play with 2MD: VR Football for the PlayStation VR.
2MD: VR Football allows you to be the Quarterback you have always wanted to be. When you first start the game you get to hear that voice, your coach. Knowing good and well that his job is on the line if you do not produce by winning the game. So pay attention to what he says and you might just become MVP. Being able to see the whiteboard in front of you that has some plays listed, you are then able to move the players to see where they will go, you can change the colors of your team, pick your team, and even grab the marker to make your own plays. I had to do it…I had to draw a circle just to see and when I picked the play, my teammate went in the circle. Its this type of added options that just keep you wanting to keep playing.
After you picked the plays, it was time to do some training. Once in training, I was able to grab the footballs and started to throw them through the rings. The accuracy is spot on. It will take you a few throws to get used to how well the camera can track vs you throwing. I was starting to get used to this and once I completed training, I was awarded a trophy. So thank you for rewarding me on my completion of training.
Once I was ready, I grabbed my Football helmet and put it on and there I was out on the field with two minutes to go. But you might wonder how does one actually play 2MD: VR Football in Virtual Reality? It’s actually very easy, so grab a Move controller and get ready to be that Quarterback. The square, triangle, x, and circle buttons call the different plays before the snap and the same buttons will allow you to run after the snap. The T button allows you to hold onto the football and you throw and release the T button to throw it (yes you can even lob or throw the ball underhanded if you desire). And the Move button before the snap allows you to use voice commands and after the snap allows you to run. Wait did I just say voice commands? Yes, you can call audibles and it works.
I am going to say this now, 2MD: VR Football is a blast to play. Being able to be on the field and hearing the fans cheer makes you feel like you are playing. What I really liked it when it was the start of the 4th down and I heard those gongs, I wasn’t sure if The Undertaker himself was going to come and get me or if Metallica’s For Whom The Bell Tolls was about to start playing, but it got even more into the game. But you start to rack up the points that get added to your final score based on the different things you may do, from throwing that hail mary pass to scoring very quickly.
After each of the two minutes, you get a bonus round. In these rounds, you have to throw as many footballs as you can through the hoops as possible. Not only that, you will see your teammate going towards the end zone and try to pass it to him all while trying to throw the footballs through the rings. By perfecting your aim, the more you will be able to score. Not only will the passing help, but running the plays as well. But if you feel that the clock is racing against you, then feel free to do anything to help stall time. Yes, this means spiking the ball as well as throwing out of bounds works here as well.
Something I would have loved to see is to have all your friends on your friend’s list name to appear on the back of the jerseys. It’s not a necessity, but it would still be fun to see. But 2MD: Virtual Football has a lot to offer. Not only do you get to unlock teams, you get to call audibles with your voice (which again works very well) as well as using the controls, PlayStation 4 Pro support, a professional voice cast from the talents of SungWon Cho, Xander Mobus, David Wald (just to name a few), filling up the locker room with the trophies you have earned to even regional and friend leaderboards.
Overall 2MD: VR Football is something that should be played. Everything just works and in the end, I just wanted to keep trying until I could get my name on the scoreboard. Even if you do not get your name up there, don’t be sour, you still get a trophy. And yes, even if you did not win and you feel that you need to blame your team for not catching your inaccuracy to throw to them correctly under pressure, then, by all means, throw that trophy at them or at the crowd or at the coach.
When you can throw a football in a virtual place and two minutes left in the game starts to feel a little real, then could this be the turning point where Virtual Reality sports takes on a new form where anyone can play on the same level on the same playing field?
2MD: VR Football is out now on PlayStation VR and is also available on Steam and Viveport. A review copy was provided.
