Solaris Offworld Combat – The Review

May 31, 2021 ·

When you think about eSports now, what really comes to mind? Would it be the action, the environment, maybe even the thrill of the moment as your favorite team tries to win and hopes that they will become number one? But what if the next phase, the next evolution in eSports allowed to be played in Virtual Holofields where the action took place because of your actions of playing? Seeing how things progress, we may not be too far from that. But does developer First Contact Entertainment show us what possibly the future of eSports could be like? Let’s find out with Solaris Offworld Combat for the PlayStation VR.

Solaris Offworld Combat you play as an Athlon, part of an elite team of four in a fast-paced, multiplayer shooter that drops you right in the middle of the action in 4v4 match-ups that will have you running, sprinting, sliding, and shooting your way across arenas as you pick up different weapons and items as you try to eliminate your opponents. So before you get right into the action, and trust when I say, you will want to get right into the action, there are a couple of things that you want to make sure you have ready to go. For one, make sure that your DualShock 4 controller is ready to go. That is unless you don’t have the Aim controller, which if you do have the Aim controller, you really may want to play Solaris Offworld Combat this way. Just for some reason, it feels very good here, so make sure whichever controller you go with, just make sure it is charged.

One thing you will notice that when you die and it will happen, that respawning only takes about three seconds. Just seconds which is amazing of not having to sit and wait while your other team is down because either you spawned right where someone fired off their shots, you are just having an off day, or light messed with the tracking. Which when I first started, I admit, all happened to me within seconds of starting. But that’s ok, you know what they say, practice makes perfect, right?

As you move around the arenas, you will notice weapons that once you touch become your new weapon, until the ammunition for that weapon run out and then back to your original pistol weapon that hopefully will make the shot count. Probably not as well as the other weapons you will find such as shotguns, grenade and rocket launchers, and even rifles as well as two different items, deployable cover and proximity mines that can be used to your advantage that are scattered around the holofields (arenas) so you can try to have the advantage weapon wise by the time you get to the control point and hope that it hasn’t moved by the time you get to where you and your team need to go. Again, communication does play an important part in the game as you can find out from your team the best way to go and be on the lookout for each other before the other team ends up where you were not expecting them to be. And all this while getting those points to use to unlock different cosmetics and trying to climb those leaderboards is just fun trying to get to as well as rewarding for the hard work that you and your team put in.

When looking at the graphics, some may look and say it might be a little too common. And yes, this very well might be the case to a point, it doesn’t mean it’s not fun to play in. When I first started playing Solaris Offworld Combat, the arenas had this familiarity to them that I could not put my finger on at the beginning and the more I played, the more it came to me. This reminded me more and more of an awesome virtual laser tag match with the neon black lighting ability to hide in certain spots and fire at the enemy at certain angles (until the other team sees where the shots are coming from and will head your way) as well as be on different levels trying to get that advantage shot as your team tries to control the points. Then when you see an enemy or you get to take that final shot and see the disintegrating effect really is a nice touch. The sound is good as well. The soundtrack that comes with the game has that sci-fi musical flow (that I have just listened to it on its own) that doesn’t overshadow the gameplay or drown out the action but does add the right balance between the action and the music. Then when you add in the weapons and hearing the different sounds each one makes really does have this complimentary tone to it all.

There are some things that I would love to see added to the game. For one, additional arenas will be added. Right now there are seven maps. I did not see all seven in my time playing and I did play quite a bit. Second, more game modes. Don’t let this discourage you with just one game mode, as it is fun, but adding different modes here would be a blast. Modes like CTF that would be awesome in this arena-type setting or even adding a Freeze Tag where if you get shot by the enemy, you are frozen and have to have your teammates come and unfreeze you until one team is completely frozen would be fun as well. And lastly, cross-play. Solaris Offworld Combat has been out now for the Oculus Rift/Rift S and Oculus Quest/Quest 2 with cross-play support for both, let’s get the PlayStation VR added to the fun as well. The support is supposed to be coming, but when it does, think about the Oculus Rift/Rift S vs Oculus Quest/Quest 2 vs PSVR battles that could be. But then, which platform would have the advantage with PSVR having Dualshock 4 and Aim controller support and Oculus having the Touch controllers. I personally cannot wait for this.

Solaris Offworld Combat gives the addictive action, FPS fun, and quick respawns that we need in VR. It allows us to work on our team building and communication skills while showing us what the future of eSports very well could be like as well as giving us all a chance to be that virtual athlete when in real life may not have the opportunity to do so either by some of our own physical limitations or self-consciousness that some may have. In times when we try to have the most positive outlook in life even when others don’t want us to, isn’t it good to have an escape where you can be part of a team for a common goal?

Solaris Offworld Combat is out now for the Oculus Rift/Rift S and Oculus Quest/Quest 2 on the Oculus Store, digitally on PlayStation VR, and coming as a physical edition to the Perp Games Store on June 25, 2021. A review code was provided.
