The game of Cornhole has been played with family and friends for many decades. It has been known by many names ranging from sack toss to bean bag toss. The idea is simple and can be played in quick sessions of throwing a bag at a board and trying to score points against the other player. But does developer ForeVR Games bring the game that is enjoyed by many and allow us to score that Cornhole with anyone? Let’s find out with ForeVR Cornhole for the Quest 2.
ForeVR Cornhole is a game where you can either play solo, with friends or make new friends by joining online games where each of you takes a turn to throw your bag at the board and tries to score points either by landing on the board or making it in the hole. So before you go and throw your bags all over the place, there are a few things that you want to be aware of. First, make sure you have some room. You don’t want to be throwing your arm around and hitting someone, a pet, or walls. Second, the game is about throwing the virtual bags, not your controllers. So use those wrist straps. Third, make sure those controllers are charged. You don’t want to try and make that winning throw only to have your controller die and the other person wins because of it. I’m sure they would appreciate it. And finally, just have some fun as you never know who your newest friend will be. With that said, let’s continue…
When you first start ForeVR Cornhole, there is a familiar setting that anyone that has played any of ForeVR Games titles will easily recognize. But if this is your first outing with ForeVR Games, the atmosphere is a welcoming one. You have immediately entered the lobby and are shown how to move around. By the desk and to the left you will see a screen and a keyboard where you can play your favorite songs from YouTube from listening or watching the videos to even just watching anything on YouTube and it’s all at your fingertips. On the other side, you will see your wall for trophies to even the leaderboards. This just makes you be on the lookout for who the top players are and should give you the motivation to beat them. It’s all in the name of fun, right? You also have the Pro Shop where you can earn the coins to buy new boards and bags and I have to say, some of these bags and boards are pretty awesome from the Sad Panda to Sando.
Now, before you go out there and play against someone, you may want to understand the rules here. The game will start with a coin toss. Each player has four bags to throw or toss (depending on your style) per round. If you are playing 1v1, then each player will get to toss one of the four bags, but if you are playing 2v2, each player will get to throw or toss their bags before the next player. The games are played trying to score either 11 or 21 (which can be selected) points first. The object is trying to make it in the hole or at least on the board. You will need to watch how hard you throw or toss as your bag may hit the board and slide right off or not even land. If you land a bag on the board, you will receive one point. However, if the other player throws their bag and knocks your bag off, you lose that point while, if the other player’s bag stays on the board, they get the point.
Now, there is some terminology that you should know when it comes to ForeVR Cornhole. If you can make the bag land in the hole without touching the board, that is called an Airmail. If you throw a bag onto the board and then it slides into the hole, that is called a Cornhole. If you make three Cornholes in a row, that’s called a Holy Moly Triple Cornholy. If you get all of your four bags onto the board, that is called a 4 Leaf Clover, and if you can make all four of your bags into the hole, that’s called The Grand Cornholio…no not that Conrnholio.
When you are ready to play, you do have a few choices. You can play Single Player against the AI, Quick Match so you can play with other players, Private Game if you want to play with your friends, and then Pass and Play where you share the headset with up to 4 players. But the fun here is playing with others, so of course, jumping right into Quick Match will help feed that competitive edge. When I did play, I didn’t have too much wait before a game would start. Now, I will say this, there are some players who, and for the most part are friendly and happy to play, you have shy players that may not want to speak and want to play, and you may run across a player that may talk smack. The good thing is you can easily mute yourself or them if need be. But once you find someone to play against, it’s just a good time, especially when you can play the music from the jukebox to help you get the groove of things.
I will say that I did learn a few tricks. For one, if you know that your throwing is off just a tad, go into settings to make some adjustments. Second, you can play standing or sitting, so find what works for you. And finally, position. Just find the right angle based on how you through and stick with it. After I did these things I was even surprising myself with how accurate the throwing is.
Let’s talk about the graphics and sound. The graphics are clear and detailed. Looking at the amount of detail that ForeVR Games has put into each of the bags, boards, and halls and even challenging NPC Pros in each of the halls, including where you play on top of a rooftop, is a very pleasant and fun experience. As far as the sound, hearing the bags being thrown while listening to music, I was still able to hear and communicate with other players loud and clear. But when you are having such a good time while playing, you may not even need to have the music on.
There are a few things that I hope to get added. For one, when I first started playing, there was something missing and that was the ability to join the other games, ForeVR Bowl and ForeVR Darts. But with the newest update, that has been taken care of, and not only that, ForeVR Games has added something special if you own any of the other games where you receive the VIP treatment. With the VIP treatment, you get exclusive bags and boards as well as a 50,000 coin bonus for each other game owned to stock your arsenal as you unlock new bags and boards. Second, I would love to see even more bags, boards, and halls. I am sure that they are coming and it would be interesting to see what comes next. And lastly, it would be fun where players could make their own rules for the games. For example, when playing on the moon, let’s have the ability to adjust the gravity to add to the fun, or when you play on the rooftop, have a power-up feature where one player could send an asteroid or have a lightning bolt come down next to the other player just for the fun of it.
ForeVR Cornhole continues the blueprint of fun that ForeVR Games has set for itself. It allows us to play Cornhole with old and new friends anytime we like. It allows us to let down our guard, relax, and throw as we try to aim for that hole in the board of life. And it’s that throw that can either be our ally or an enemy in the making that we take what we have and throw it with a chance that luck is on our side, and couldn’t we all use a little more luck in our lives?
ForeVR Cornhole is out now for the Quest 2 on the Oculus Store. A review code was provided.
