September 30, 2019 ·

Monkey King from Digital Domain has been released on PlayStation VR. Based on the Chinese Mythology, following Sun Wukong aka the Monkey King who born from a stone who has supernatural powers that just wants to belong.

Just like if you were going to go to the movies, you would not want to know what would happen beforehand and I am not going to give away anything as you will want to experience this for yourself. But when you start Digital Domain’s Monkey King, you are presented with some beautiful art and some pictures of the story to come. With the welcoming of Sun Wukong to the transformation or as we will know him as the Monkey King.

The sounds are alive and the visuals have that very clear impact that we all enjoy. This is not just a 360 film of sorts, the VR really works well here. From the battles that are shown in front of you to the atmospheric scenes. Monkey King is 360 degrees of storytelling, but never loses it focuses on the point of the story and get distracted and for that, I really appreciated.

The characters, even though some may be a bit stereotype, do an excellent job and add to the story. Keep in mind, if you have kids and want to show them, you may want to watch this first. Why the majority will have that family feel to it, there may be a few parts in the battles where there’s no gruesome blood, but some characters get ripped. The three chapters are about 10 minutes each are telling a story, but there are more tales for the Monkey King that are set to be released

With all that said, I really enjoyed the Monkey King. It’s one of those times, that you can just sit back and relax and enjoy what’s going on with Virtual Reality. Is this going to be for you? Honestly, if you enjoy VR, then yes. We are starting to see the future where future movies and shows will have this experience. I love seeing how progression plays out. If Monkey King is going to take a chance on how movies, shows, art, and science will be in VR, then I am happy to experience all of it.

Monkey King is out now and is also available for the Oculus Rift/S, and Oculus Go and Gear VR by downloading the Digital Domain VR app on the Oculus Store, Steam, and Viveport. A Review copy was provided.

In case you missed the trailer, please enjoy. Until next time, I cannot wait to see the upcoming chapters.
