R.I.P. Google Daydream…

October 7, 2020 ·

Sad news has been given to the world of Google Daydream. The headset was first released on November 10, 2016, and used a smartphone to bring the world of Virtual Reality to many. It was a simple design, but effective. The previous version of Google Cardboard was so simple, so crazy that by inserting your phone into basically a cardboard design, the world of Virtual Reality was opened to many of our eyes. But Google Daydream with a more protective holding and a controller that was charged by a USB C cable.

It allowed many to enter new worlds and play some amazing games for its time. Adding YouTube VR, Netflix VR, and Hulu VR was an added benefit that served an entertainment purpose for many and that still to this day people still use. But it was limited by the phone that you could use.

From sports to movies, to games, to social interaction, Google Daydream along with its simple controller was an entertainment go-to for many. But it seems that any Google Daydream-compatible phone that receives the Android 11 update, will basically send any last chance of Virtual Reality escape for Google Daydream to its grave. But this is not really a surprise for many as Google has a track record of killing off their concepts even if it could be for something better.

So, for those that have a chance to upgrade to the newest Android 11 update and still wish to access Google Daydream may have to find another way to escape into Virtual Reality. But for those that want to keep using the platform, you will need to find a used phone that probably will not receive the Android 11 update such as the Galaxy S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note 8, Note 9, Asus Zenphone AR, and LG L30 for example.

But if you have a Google Daydream-compatible phone that will receive the Android 11 update, you will need to decide for the latest and greatest Android features or don’t upgrade and enjoy.
