Virtual Reality Helps Train U.S. Airforce…

October 19, 2019 ·

Virtual Reality allows us to become someone else, visit anywhere, and even create things, but it can also have a productive approach. The U.S. Airforce had sessions for helicopter pilot training. The training was labeled “Project da Vinci”, enabled the first six VR-trained airman squad to graduate this past October 11, 2019. What normally would take 28 weeks to complete, was reduced to 14 weeks and what would have been a class of 60, was doubled to 120. When training started, Virtual Reality was used the very next day. This allowed these future pilots to get accustomed to a faster time and actually enter a real TH-1H cockpit of a Bell 412 Unity utility helicopter in under 20 hours of classroom training. What is fascinating is that these future pilots were able to taxi, hover and perform numerous helicopter maneuvers without any help from instructors. When you add the shortened hours that were needed, you are also reducing the cost that is needed per student. With this proven record, Virtual Reality is now becoming standard. And just think how many more can be trained and how much money can be saved all with the help of Virtual Reality.
